Crown City Imports Japanese P Copy -SOLD- Cleaning house; next up on the block is this very cool Japanese Precision copy. I picked it up recently on CL, because it had such a nice neck, now it’s time for someone else to enjoy it. I posted a “What Bass Is This?” thread recently, and the awesome TB research department came up with the answer. Turns out a pawn/music store in The Crown City of Pasadena imported these and sold them sometime in the 70’s. It’s not clear what factory they came out of, but is an example of the high quality knock-offs that were being done at the time. Those of you who might be bassists for the Lord will surely dig on the fact that the superimposed “IC” headstock logo has hidden meaning. I got it in typical neglected state; all grimy, dead strings, terrible setup and a tuner that was totally wrong. It’s been put right; sweat stains washed off, threw on a set of “old style” Fender flats (whatever that is- ‘bought ‘em used here), frets leveled, found a Fender branded tuner that fits in with the originals, replaced missing bridge saddle adjusting screw (non-vintage hex head- sorry!) new foam under the pups, cleaned up the output jack and replaced the ground wire, gave it a decent setup. Added a totally custom teak thumb rest! It’s a pretty righteous rocking P Bass. Specs: Laminated body, the core is a fairly light asian variety “mahogany,” with maple or birch or something face veneers. Good looking if a bit bright colored sunburst poly finish. Scratches and scuffs fer’sure but not in bad shape at all. The neck is a two-piece construction; slab fretboard overlay. Truss rod works well. Weighs just about nine pounds. Neck is 1-9/16” at the nut, 7/8” thick at first through twelfth frets, 19 mm string spacing at bridge. Comes with a decent Fender gig bag that has one strap adjustment slider busted, and a servicable black nylon strap. Boutique it isn’t, but a very servicable instrument, and needs a new home. Let’s start at an asking price of $200 shipped CONUS. If you’re a starving young musician and deserve a great deal, PM Me with an essay of 200 words or less on why I should let this go for the low, low price of ________. You will be graded on proper use of written English. OK, enough of the grumpy old man talk, let’s have some pictures! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Beautiful bass. Where are you located? |
That, sir, is utterly cool. :bassist: Currently in my Lenten period of giving up GAS. I do hope a starving student wins a great deal on this lovely specimen with a well-worded essay! GLWTS. |

And it looks like this one is on it's way to Austin, soon to be kickin' hippie's asses and raisin' hell. Can I say that on TB? And if you don't get the song reference, shame on you. |
