Custom-built Warrior 5 copy, Moses neck, $400 shipped CONUS

Hi, here's an odd one. This has a nicely built body, closely modeled after a Warrior bass, with sandwiched woods and a very very nice look to it. The body weight is nice and light, and is extremely well balanced to me. The neck is a Moses graphite five string neck, 5 bolt. The tuners are Gibson(!?). Electronics are dual Seymour Duncan basslines and there is a preamp in the cavity but I don't know what it is. The cavity has been shielded with foil. The sound is very active, too "active" for me, aggressive, modern, and punchy. The main volume has a push/pull feature but only seems to blast out more bass frequency than act as an active/passive switch. Overall, a really cool, superb looking bass. It's set-up currently with a medium low action and is ready to go.

And now, the catch. The neck block area has two cracks in it that definitely involve wood. If you run your finger over one of them you can feel the wood height differences. I don't know enough about instruments/repair to judge how serious this stuff is or how best to deal with it. But that's the 'issue' with this bass.

Someone put a lot of time, money, and effort to put this thing together, but I'm left thinking, they didn't quite know how to get it together on the highest professional level.

That being said, I think for the money, it's a much cooler investment into 5 string territory than many similarly priced instruments available commercially. It has a really nice vibe to it. Personally, I'm sticking to 4's. Thanks for checking it out, shoot me a PM or a reply for bigger and better pictures or questions. Bass is in Houston, TX and also listed on the Craigslist site.

pics and info

Hi,
To answer a bunch of questions:
The scale length is 34"
The neck is great and frets are in very good shape
The weight is about 10.3lbs on my bathroom scale
The string spacing at the bridge seems to be at 15mm(? I'm not sure what's 'standard' for a five, and I'm also not sure I was measuring it correctly--I just measured the space between the B and the E string as best I could)
The control layout is master volume(push/pull seems to have an exploding bass effect), pickup blend, stacked bass and treble, and a separate mid knob. I did peek inside and there does seem to be a preamp floating around in there, but I'm not familiar with identifying it.
Hope this helps! Again, please just ask for any more pics if you're interested. Here are some of the troubled neck joint area.

about string spacing...

15mm would be pretty narrow. I *think* the usual method of measuring is from the center of one string to the center of the next adjacent string. You could also measure from the center of the B to the center of the G and divide by 4 (not 5) to get a perhaps more accurate measurement:

B E A D G (5 strings, 4 spaces between strings).

Now, the above makes sense to me -- if anyone spots any errors, please correct!

Measurements of the neck width at the nut and last fret might also be useful.

Neat looking, interesting bass. Good luck!

measurements

Hi,
When I measured from the middle of the B to the middle of the E I get 18mm, and when I take a total measurement and divide by 4 I get 17mm, so either way you're right, 15mm is way off. I'm primarily a 4 string player and this feels very comfortable to 'transition' to, but for me the mental issues of adding that B are just too weird for now.

The width of the fingerboard at the nut is: 45.13mm, or 1.77"
The width of the fingerboard at the body is: 75.11mm or 2.957"

Thanks!

After seeing the cracks I wouldn't be scared of this one at all !!! I've had several fenders that did the same exact thing and never had a issue with neck stability , intonation or tuning . Wish I had the extra cash . Christmas , and two kids birthdays within two weeks have me strapped down .

Any sounds?

Yes, this bass makes lots of sounds, Ha Ha! Sorry, I don't have any way to do a decent sound recording. A good way to hear it is to buuuuuuy it! Thanks.

It doesn't look like the crack is in a sensitive area, so I wouldn't worry about grabbing this.

Bump for a sweet bass!
