Custom Hill Bass -Reverse P/J with Nordstrand Pups and Plek Setup - Price Drop!

I'm closing the thread due to lack of firm offers. Couple of nibbles but money's tight for alot of folks. It's too nice not to play so I'm putting it back into the rotation. You should hear it do "Roundabout". A real Ric 4003 killer.

I might relist later if cash gets tight. We'll see.

Jon Hill of Hill Guitars was a luthier out of Cleveland OH. Though Hill Guitars is no longer in business, he is now the woodshop manager at Dean Guitars in Tampa Florida.

I traded a mint 2008 American Standard P-Bass for it early last winter. When I saw the pics I was smitten with the neck. Laminated strips of figured maple and walnut with a thick 22 fret rosewood board. 1 1/2" nut. The body has a tiger striped top with a reddish tint and the back has a clear finish over what I think is alder (wood experts please correct me) The cavity cover is wood which I think is walnut. The only flaw in the finish is a cloudiness towards the bottom on the back as you can see in the photo.

Since I got it, I did some MAJOR upgrades. The previous owner had a thumb rest on it. I didn't like it so I removed it and commissioned a new pickguard to cover the marks it left. It was custom made by Greasy Groove out of Canada. The original pickups were passive Jackson's. I replaced them with a Nordstrand NPJ4SV set from Bestbassgear. One of the volumes (it's VVT) was scratchy so I replaced all three controls with CTS 250K pots, also from BBG. Even though this setup is hum cancelling, I still copper shielded and solder grounded all cavities. The frets were in great shape but I had a little buzz on my 105 E around the 13th fret. I took the bass to The Music Gallery in Highland Park, Illinois and had a complete setup with a Plek job done.

The sound is amazing. It is an articulate rock P bass first and foremost but with the bridge pup brought in about half-way it cuts like a laser. I've owned three Ric 4003s and this comes pretty close when you back off the P pup a quarter and roll the bridge pup all the way up. I play through a Pod X3 Live and with this setup, it can really sound like any type of bass. It's a blank canvas that can be the foundation of any sound.

$950 shipping and insurance included
Paypal or USPS Money Order

It would have shipped (insured) inside a Road Runner Deluxe Gig Bag, carefully packed in a bass-guitar-sized, heavy cardboard box.

I can email BIG detailed pictures per request. Some of the Photobucket pictures open a new window if you click on them and go full size if you click again on picture in the window.

I keep on coming back to this thread. Something about this bass really hits me. I have low funds and not much trade bait, but bump nonetheless!

I have some new PA needs so I have some trade options here.

Yes
  • QSC K series powered speakers and subs
  • QSC HPR series powered speakers and subs
  • QSC amplifiers (prefer powered speakers, though)
  • Yamaha or Mackie 14 (or more) channel mixers
  • JBL EON Series powered speakers

No
  • Behringer
  • Harbinger
  • Nady
  • Phonic
  • Cerwin Vega

I don't want to debate the value or percieved quality of "NO" items. May I just politely say I don't want 'em and leave it at that?

Not bass related... but I absolutely love my QSC K-10 series P.A. Great systems that seriously perform. 2 k-10's and k-sub as mains and 2 k-10's as monitors.

I was blown away by a demo at GC of a pair of K8s and one QSC K SUB.

I would consider a trade even up for a QSC K SUB for my Hill. I'll even cover the shipping of the bass and the cab.

I sold my SBMM SB-14 and bought a Lakie 44-02. After tweaking around with both those active basses, I'm really growing to appreciate the smooth passive tone of my Hill. It's not Jazz bass smooth, in my opinion, its better. It's got the big shoulders voice of a P-Bass with a bit of Ric to it. I know you can slap anything but this bass is more a guitar, not a percussion instrument. Its sound begs to be played with a pick or aggressive fingerstyle. Not that you can't play Dougie Thompson's "School" smooth but it loves songs like Squire's "Roundabout" and Water's "Money"....Sorry for the old fart prog references to our younger TB'rs

I need the money and should sell it, but if my Hill doesn't go by Sunday night. I'm pulling the listing. If you've been watching this thread and have been on the fence, let's talk. This is a really, really good bass.

Looks like no nibbles so I'm closing the thread and putting it back into my play rotation along with my new 44-02. I may be modding it some more. Who knows.

If you find this thread and are intersted in talking to me about it, just send me a PM.
