ERNIE BALL Musicman 1988 Stingray - Custom Finish, PreEB Preamp, Status Graphite Neck

Sign in to disble this ad
SOLD!!!

I know I'm going to regret this. Here is my fully custom Stingray. Started with a 1988 4-bolt EB Stingray body that was beat to heck - had it refinished by Pat Wilkins in Honeyburst (pics here, body #2). Added a Status Graphite Stingray neck and installed some lightweight Hipshot HB1 tuners, Seymour Duncan Basslines pickup, Dunlop Straplocks and an original 1979 pre-EB 2-band EQ preamp (wired to the original 88 plate/pots).

Everything about this build is custom. I had high-strength steel inserts installed into the heel - the neck is bolted on with 10-24 stainless steel machine screws. A small custom shim was made to fill the gap in the neck pocket (on the treble side), so the neck joint is just rock solid. The combo of the Duncan pickup. pre-EB preamp and graphite neck is just magic - super aggressive and in-your-face. I went through a few different pickups before settling on this combo. Action is super low with a new set of DR Sunbeams, frets are in great shape with no flat spots or grooves (stainless steel, so very durable). New stainless steel pickguard screws too.

The bass is basically new - has not left the house since I got it refinished. Some minor wear on the neck (no gouges or dents, just some light scuffs scratches from normal play wear). Scratches/scuffs on the original bridge, control plate, pickguard, neck plate and battery cover. Previous owner lightly scrawled his phone number on the neck plate (barely visible).

Specs:
Body: Alder
Neck: Status Graphite Musicman Neck
Fingerboard: Composite
Scale: 34"
Tuners: Hipshot HB1 Chrome
Pickup: Seymour Duncan Basslines MM Humbucker
Preamp: 1979 Pre-EB 2-Band
Bridge: Original 1988 Musicman
Pickguard: Original Black
Weight: 9.4 lbs.

SELLING FOR $1500 SHIPPED IN THE US with a non-original case (that's less than cost of the parts). International shipping is no problem...just PM for a quote.

Thanks. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I like to make sure those words aren't crap.

It was my attempt to recreate a Pre-EB Cutlass bass I owned a long time ago...pretty much nails it and is FAR more playable than that bass ever was. Very similar to the NAMM 100th Anniversary Stingray bass (which also had a status neck on it). Only reason I'm selling it is because I have two pre-EB Stingrays and a pre-EB Sabre I'm having restored.

How would you compare it to a Flea Modulus?

This one is a bit warmer and fatter than the Modulus Flea bass (which is one of my all-time favorite basses). Has more "oomph" in the lower mids too.

Also, in the unlikely event that the person reading this does not know jtlee, he is a great guy and you can absolutely take him at his word.
