F/S 1979 Fender P Bass " S9 "

Sign in to disble this ad
Very nice original ( except ashtrays ) " S9 " Fender P bass ,
w/OHSC ... will come with Chromes on it ..

From my understanding Fender made a crapload of necks and bodies in 1978-79 ... getting way ahead of production ...

this bass has matching " S9 " serial number on head/body ..
I bought it as a "79" ... but after peeking under the pickguard at the pots .. they are dated 81 ...

so my best description is that the neck/body where made in 79 and it was Fender US factory assembled in 81 ... but has " S9 " serial number..! so everyone can argue all they want as to when it was actually made ... whatever ... very Generally speaking ... " S " serial numbers = mostly 70's ...

but it's a great looking / playing bass ... ash / rosewood ...
not too heavy ... under 10 for sure ... much less than my older USA NYC Atelier Z5 .. !

Org. $1,450 .. NOW $1,400 shipped CON USA Only ...

check my Ebay feedback , over a decade at 100% .. dacuck
send PM w/email for pics and info/questions ..!

No offense, but most if not all here would likely call this a 1981 P (and advertise it as such). Anyway, best of luck with the sale!

Are you the original owner?
... just wondering if the pickups are original or perhaps replacements.

Anyway ... still pretty sweet.

as i said .. the pots say 1981 ... that's when it was assembled ... but the neck/body Where made at an earlier date .. if you want to discuss Fender's crappy serial numbers, then start another Thread .

i bought it 'Here' , and it was, at that time advertised, sold and bought, .. as a 1979 ..

i was just trying to examine it a little deeper and explain my findings ... if i had not pulled up the pickguard , and/or disclosed that i did .. we would be calling this a 79 .. "S9"

if the serial number was an " E1 " , that might make more sense , but i think the 80's "E" numbers probably started later in 82 ... ??

no i am not the original owner ... but i was already playing for several years before 79 .. ! for it's age , it's doing better than i am .. !

and , as i stated , every is original except the ash trays ...

thanks for looking ... Dave C.

ps ... in my sig i call it a 79/81 .. but that makes it sound like a frankbass , which it's not ... it's around 30 years old , i'm around 53 ..

I have one of these S9 serial basses too. The S9 serial numbers are very confusing. On my bass, the neck is stamped 1982 at the neck heel. Have you taken the neck off to look for stampings?

i had been told by a collector a while back that Fender made a crapload of necks/bodies in 78/79 getting ahead of production ... as rumors started of their pending sale in the mid 80's ...

i guess that unless you actually worked ay the factory at that time ... then that person would know for sure what was happening ... !!! hell , i don't remember most of 1978 and 79 ...!!

the neck/body have an "S9 " serial number on them ..

i had the neck off once ... it does not have the 8 digit neck stamp code from the mid 70's that i was used to .. had just 4 kinda fuzzy digits .. so which 4 out of the 8 are those ..??

4 7 8 2 ... ?

4 th week

1978

2nd day ...?? i have No idea ...

4th planet from the sun
7 inches from the moon
8 days a week
2 more inches , please ..?????????

the only thing that i'm sure about is the serial number sticker in the neck pocket matches the serial number on the head ..
the " S9 " number ...

then there's a few other sets of stamped numbers on the back of the neck .... and the usually pencil marks ...

Others from the period that I've seen have that type date code and it would indicate that this neck was stamped on April 7th, 1982. Pretty simple! Beautiful bass too.

Correct, it's an '82 Fender.
