Just got this bass in a trade and need to move it to offset the cost. This is a 1972 Fender P-Bass in Blonde Ash finish (has aged to a creamy yellow). It's unusual in that it has a maple fretless fingerboard (not many of these out there).
The neck is dated Jun 72, body is not date stamped but it has markings under the pickguard and a "Chambers" stamp in the neck pocket which is era correct. By the way the neck was sticking to the body finish when I pulled it off, I don't think this neck has ever been off the body. The original black pickguard is cracked but is included in the case. The current pickguard is a tortoiseshell WD guard. The pots were changed as they are R13778XXX stamps (1978), but the pickup is original. Looks like the pots and pickguard are the only non-original parts. There are holes for the covers and thumbrest drilled in appropriate spots but i do not have the original covers.
The bass plays and sounds fantastic. I'm not much of a fretless player, so it's not my bag, but the maple board gives this bass a unique tone vs my fretless rosewood Jazz. The body has lots of small finish nicks and checking but no major gouges or dents. No cracks or major buckle rash. Played, but abused. Back of the neck is smooth, fingerboard has no major wear (just string marks and finish darkening along the edges). Comes with the original Fender amp-logo case (all latches work, all hinges present but one is missing two screws). The original Fender warranty reg card is also included.
