this is so tempting, I got a white '62 RI (beautifully aged to cream) which dates to 31/3/83 and I'd love to have another bass like it.
wish I had the money because these dont come up very often for that price (paid nearly 2000 for mine half a year ago).

I'm trying to work out my finances... as I **really** would like to buy your Fullerton P bass

As "Aussie" Mark said, the only affordable method of shipment to Australia is to have it shipped without the case (dang!) and the neck removed from the body...

Even without the case, the way the Aussie dollar is spiralling downward, it works out to be a AU$2600.00 bass by the time I get it to my door It's a real looker though!

Cheers

Tell me about it! 3 weeks ago this price was absolute bargain basement, when the AUD was above $0.80, but at $0.65 it's a different story.

Yep, it's amazing the difference a few days can make. After import taxes and GST, this would now be a $2,900.00 bass by the time it arrives at my door. Unfortunately, I still want it badly!

Andy, in case you weren't aware, there is no import duty (other than the normal 10% GST) on this bass, for two reasons - solid body electric basses have a tariff concession (ie. 0%), and the country of origin (manufacture) being the USA (because of the Aust-US free trade agreement).

The only other cost, if you ship neck off via USPS Express Courier or Priority Mail International, is the $48.55 entry fee charged by Customs to process the import documentation.

That said, the exchange rate is still a killer!

Why is the Aussie currency taking such a dive?

Calling it "bass parts" won't make any difference, as it's still 0% import duty.

For around the past 10 years the Aussie $ has hovered between the 0.70-0.75 range, but when the US financial crisis first hit a couple of months back the Aussie $ shot up to 0.95. Now that the US crisis is starting to impact the Australian economy, our dollar has taken a dive, and it's down to 0.65 now.

In the bigger picture, 0.65 is not that scary, as when I travelled overseas in the early 1980's it was around 0.65 at that time.

The Australian economy is very sound, and our banking system is highly regulated, which means our money is safe, but the exchange rate doesn't make purchases from the US as attractive now as they were earlier this year.

Hey Mark,

You must have your own private Customs lackey. I've imported around 10 guitars and basses using FedEx or UPS for my own personal use over the past 2 years from the USA. It's the same story every time.

If the combined value of the instrument and freight is less than AU$1,000.00, then the item gets in the country without any GST or import tariffs.

If the combined value of the item and freight exceeds AU$1,000.00, then you pay 10% GST on the combined total, plus 5% import tax for musical instruments, plus the import entry fee of $60 or $70... I've gone through the process enough times to calculate the fees to the cent. Either that or I'm being ripped off every time. The postal entry fee is lower than the courier import entry fee.
