Excuse my ignorance but is it basically the same as the American Jazz Deluxe except the block inlays?

No. It's about top of the line construction, woods, better pickups (noisless jazz - they are great, i had them), preamp, top notch QC, attention to smallest details. and i think those necks are 1/4 sawn. i don't know if that's an option or standard. but 1/4 sawn necks look stunning!!!
