What is the purpose of the copper strip between the bridge pick up and the bridge? I have one on my CIJ jazz and I'm not sure what it is for. I assumed it was for earthing reasons but I'm not sure.

The strip is for grounding.
Thats why its very silent jazz Bass No hum or noise.
Even when playing only the bridge pickup.
