Fender Precision Fretless, vintage, 1978!

Up for sale is my beautiful ’78 Fender Precision Fretless. I am not much of a photographer, but be assured that this one is a beauty!

Soundwise, you won’t find anything better than this vintage instrument. You can check me out playing it at http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...deoid=56833518. Even through a crappy camcorder, you can hear that this bass has the thump you want from a fretless P. If tone is what you are looking for, you will not be disappointed.

It has been modified to include a Bassline Quarter Pounder pickup and a black pickguard, I don’t have the originals. Everything else is stock. For a 32 year old bass, it is in very good condition. There are a few light scratches in the front, but nothing through the finish as you can see. There are three visible dings on it; I have photographed two. There is a also a third one just above the horn. I was not able to make that one come out. This bass has been babied but used.

As you can see, the fingerboard is beautiful rosewood. It has no string marks. I have always had flats on it and the previous owner must have also, because the board is in perfect condition. The intonation is dead on.

Price is $1650 shipped. It will ship in a Fender gig bag. No trades, I would not be selling if I did not need the cash.
As I said, if you know what you want and this is it, you won’t be disappointed.

John

Holy crap that's awesome. If it were a Jazz, I'd be in trouble.

You can play fretless and sing at the same time - I can't do either independently, let alone together.

Hi Tim! Well, let's just say I did not have a choice. I am really not much of a singer, but sometimes, ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

Sounded better than 90% of the local singers we have around here!

My guitar player keeps bugging me to learn to sing backups but I tell him I have a hard enough time concentrating on playing bass. I don't think I could even chew gum and play bass at the same time. Let alone fretless!

You mean like the one on the right? It's sports a J Retro and an epoxied board!

An old friend??? How long have you had it for? I factory ordered one just like that in '78, sold it sometime in the mid 80's.

Hello Ric!

I really don't know if this is your old bass. I bought it from DiPinto Guitars around 2000. Where it came from before that is anybody's guess.

Do you have the serial number of your old bass? Here is a headstock shot.

I might still have the serial#; will look for it this weekend. Probably not I know, but it's fun to think that this *could* be it.

That is one amazing looking bass you've got there,It sucks because I've been looking for a vintage fretless precision but I don't have the funds currently

That's exactly the bass I have but I added a J in the bridge and a drop D tuner and side LED's, put the obligatory badass II in, put active EMG's for years then recently swapped for passive dimarzios from an old Roadstar, and epoxied the board (since worn off a lot). LOL. I love mine, got it for $400 back in '85, I've put a lot of $ and time into it since then.

Wow, with an added J, it must give you a lot of flexibility.

I've dealt with John extensively, and he is one of the nicest, most honest guys you'll ever meet! I've sold him two G&L Tribby SB2's, but both were through TalkBass "word-of-mouth", so I wasn't able to leave him feedback. We corresponf frequently to discuss all things bass, you won't find a nicer guy to deal with!!
