Firewood Bass F/S - CHEAP

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm putting most of my basses up for sale to fund some tool purchases, and thought I'd throw this one out there... it's the (in)famous Firewood Bass.

Last summer we had a little "competition" in the Luthier's Corner, and this was my entry. It started out as a joke but turned out to be kind of an interesting instrument. Here's the build thread with more of the details:
1st Annual TB Bass Build Competition: Firewood Bass

It's a five string fretless, with a 34" scale.

Buncha Pics: http://s117.photobucket.com/albums/o...ass/?start=all

Specs:
Neck - random scraps of teak and white oak floor planks, Bocote fingerboard (because boutique basses have to have some sort of exotic woods you've never heard of and you're not quite sure how to pronounce)
Body - walnut firewood
Tuners - Wilkinson sealed
Bridge - shiney chrome (same one Carvin uses on the SB and Bolt basses)
Pickup - uh, it works and makes it mostly sound like a bass (seriously, it's just OK and definitely usable, but you'll probably want to upgrade it... I have two walnut slugs that I can include so you can have some pickups wound for it)
Electronics - Volume and Tone

So how much would you pay for an exquisite instrument like this? $2000? $3000?

How about the low low price of just $150? In the end I think that's about what I have in it for parts, so great deal right!

Here's what the critics have to say:
"At least if it turns out bad you know it'll make good firewood!"
"I dont know if you guys have burned walnut before but I wouldnt do it in my house. Terrible smell."
"Have anybody seen a headstock joint that looks as sexy as this one?"
"I have ran across a few basses that I thought would have been better off as firewood, but this is a first for the opposite."

It is passive.

Shipping will be in addition to the asking price. I don't have a case for this bass, but I can bubble wrap it and box it to make a journey safely. Bear in mind that this bass is a little on the heavier side... I haven't priced shipping a bass in a while, so I wouldn't know what to expect as far as shipping costs go (my zip is 52302 if you want to check FedEx, UPS, USPS, etc for estimates).

Quite frankly, that is NOT my type of bass (I'm pretty much a boring old P-bass person), but ... for $150 I would figure , Why the hell not? Too bad I don't have the money at the moment, I would definitely jump on it.

Wow, I'm really shocked at the positive response I've gotten on this - must be lots of cheap guys out there

I have several people that have offered to buy the bass, so for now we'll probably consider it "sale pending". If everything falls through, I'll post that it's still available.

Thanks
Jason

I appreciate the kind words, guys. Honestly, knowing where it came from, I didn't even think anyone would shell out $150... maybe I should have started it at $2000 OBO

I'll repost some information that I sent out to a bunch of people via PM, just in case anyone else happens to be interested...

I weighed the bass this morning and it came in at 9.7 lb on my bathroom scale... so I'd say +/- 0.5 lb. This morning I did a quick setup on the bass. I hadn't played it in a long time, and the neck had bowed back slightly, so I had to put some forward pressure on it to push it back. I don't think it's an issue or problem, just wanting to give full disclosure. Additionally, when I was putting the bass together, I had dropped the pickup on the front of the bass which left a little indentation. I tried to spot repair the blemish, but there's still a couple of small marks. Looks better than the big gash, but not quite perfect. Tonight I'll try to touch it up a little better and hopefully get it even less noticeable. I just realized that I haven't made a truss rod cover for it yet, so I will make one before shipping out. Similarly, the walnut pickup slugs aren't quite ready for prime time - they need another couple coats of lacquer and a good buffing to match the finish of the rest of the bass, so there's probably a couple days of work before those would be ready to go. I don't have the measurements for the pickups on hand, but my guess is they're an odd-ball size (i.e. not a standard EMG/Bart size).

I don't have a confirmed buyer yet, but there are quite a few people in line.

And if you were really excited about this bass, I'll put in a shameless plug that I have a couple others for sale

Thanks
Jason

Wow, that's a great looking bass, and if your under-pricing reflects anything, I bet it sounds great too!

Sooo.......if you want to build another......ya know..... $150 bass....like 6 strings fretted.....lemme know lol...

Seriously, I don't keep up in the Luthier's corner because I know nothing about it, but do you take custom orders?

Bump for the nicest piece of firewood I've ever seen!!

This bass is now officially SOLD!

I wanted to thank all of the folks that showed interest in this bass. I didn't figure it would be quite so popular

Thanks again
