Free bass (not kidding) - Johnson by Axl

Sign in to disble this ad
I took this bass in as part of a trade (I think I got the short end of the stick on this trade, but live and learn). I don't need this bass, nor do I really want it taking up space. I had contemplated turning it into a project bass and have considered disassembling it, refinishing it, etc., but I would rather throw my money into a different sinkhole.

This bass is a Johnson by Axl passive p-bass. From what I gather the body is alder. Maple neck, rosewood fretboard. Controls are volume and master tone.

There are a few dings in the body and there is some glue residue over the body which looks like it was covered in duct tape or some kind of stickers at one point (kids... whatcha gonna do?) Its not "sticky", but it could use a little more cleaning up.

I am offering this bass up for FREE, because free is good. One caveat - I won't ship it, as shipping would probably be more than this is worth ($139 retail when new) so you have to pick it up. The bass is located in Holland, MI (49423 zip code).

If you're silly enough to want to trade me something for it, feel free to offer.

If nobody wants it this will eventually end up in our church's thrift store.

Yeah i hope this goes to someone that can in 20 years retell a story of starting bass on this gift they were given from a stranger.

If you lived closer i would grab it , clean it and donate it.

That's very cool of you!

Donating it to a local High School would be cool as well....imagine if in 10 years, some guy/girl becomes a world renowned bassist and says:

"It all started with this bass that some generous person donated to my school"

+100,000

Picture some kid on grandpa's knee in the year 2047... "Ya know, sonny? I never would've been a famous musician if it hadn't been for the kindness of this guy who gave me my first bass..."

A donation would be cool. I gave up playing like ten years ago...a very dark phase pf my life and gave my two cabs to two different students that were both too poor to get cabs. They were as happy as you can expect. I assume it helped them along. Fortunately I am again playing and in a few bands btw.

Check and see if your local High or Junior High can use it. I think with the budget cuts to every school system they should be able to make use of it.

This would be awesome to donate. My school has it's own communal acoustic guitars, and there are a few bass players in there who would totally dig it. More power to you, sir. Make sure it has a happy home.

Send a message via AIM to GeneralElectric
Use lighter fluid or denatured alcohol to get the fluid off. Then donate to someone needy. There are lots of those people and none of them are on TB.

Johnson was a line that was carried in the shop i used to work at.. they are actually pretty nice.. solid alder body, maple neck, rosewood board.. the Johnsons we sold had the Fender headstocks on them, prior to this shape.. although, i've seen people cut a Tele headstock out of this one..

it's a nice bass.. as good as an SX, or Squire..

give it to a kid that wants to play.. go to the local shop and ask if a student needs it..

Ok good ideas all. But is this bass in the kind if condition where it's playable? I guess what I'm getting at is what does it need? And if it needs anything, what might the associated cost be. If this is going to a school, or possibly someone way down on their luck, wouldn't it make sense that it's made right?

We as a community could pull that off.

I'll put my money where my mouth is, too, if there are reassurances that it's going to the right kind organization (school/church) or person (lost job or had health problems or kid in need).

I'll toss in the first $100 to make this bass right if such a need exists. Anyone join me? As a community, this would be a cool thing. Even if many of us can only donate $5 or $10 each. Thoughts?

Judging solely on the picture it looks to be in fine playing shape, at least it's together anyway.
