FS: 02 Modulus VJ Quilt Amber w/Villex pickups

I got this in a trade here on Talkbass about 9 months ago but have since purchased my dream Sadowsky and I don't need two Jazz's in my arsenal. Gorgeous amber quilted maple top with passive Villex pickups. Bass will come with strap locks and Modulus hard shell case. Weighs about 9.5 lbs. Haven't come across a light Modulus yet.

This bass has been gigged a lot and while there are nothing I would consider as huge dings there are a couple finish cracks that I could send in PM photos to those interested. Pretty "A-typical" neck pocket cracking often seen on natural finishes.

When I first received the bass from the trade I tried to set it up for my style only to find the truss rod not functional. Not a huge deal as the neck is a straight as an arrow and graphite w/ phenolic fingerboard. I shimmed it using a couple of business cards and now its very playable, at least in my opinion. I checked into the cost of getting the trussrod replaced but since its still very playable I did not get it replaced. Just wanted to give full disclosure.

Asking $1400 OBO in CONUS. Brand new this would be 2600 to 3000. Buyer pays shipping and Paypal is the preferred payment. No trades as I need the money and now have my dream bass in the Sadowsky. I will ship this in the hard shell case in a typical padded guitar case shaped box. PM me with any questions.

Shane

Couple of more pics. The finish cracks don't show up in bigger photos but I can take some close ups if wanted.

What is bump?

Dumb question here, but what the hell does "bump" mean when trying to sell gear?

I have a feeling it's like saying "word", but not sure. Please explain.

................and yeah, cool looking Modulus!

Thanks Bro. I thought it was something along those lines.

Just FYI, the truss rods in these basses are two way. There's a center point, where it feels like you're all the way loose, but keep turning to the left (counterclockwise) and it will start to tighten, adding relief to the neck. Takes a day or two to settle, as graphite doesn't move really quick. I have no issues with mine.

Thanks for the info Dave. That may very well be the issue. I'm going to re-check the truss-rod action as per your info. and BUMP....

Truss-Rod

Hey,
I was told Modulus VJ's have a vintage "single expanding" style truss, meaning it's one way... I don't think your truss is broken... Feel free to chime in anyone?

Well it may be that I'm just not used to graphite neck movements compared to wood. The neck is straight as an arrow in this bass and probably would never need an adjustment anyway. I tries contacting Modulus but that is a lost cause. Great sounding, playing bass that is gathering dust here.

I am the first owner of this bass. Let me clear up some things.

The cracks in the FINISH are just that, finish cracks. They developed in the first months I had the bass, and I contacted Modulus about it. They informed me the cracks were a flaw that is common to Fender type guitars, and that it was a design flaw from Fender, so I could go get bent. $3000.00 guitar with no factory support, I will NEVER buy another Modulus... I suspect that the lack of heel plate, whilst it looks slick, may lead to un-even distribution of stress on the wood, and slight deformation, leading to the finish cracks. But what do I know, I aint no engineer. To their credit, it's not their design, and the neck is solid.

On the matter of the truss rod, this was explained to a prior owner... it is a vintage style, single action truss rod, and only removes back bend, while relife is achieved through string tension. I have no idea what the current condition of the truss rod is, or if ham-fisted "technicians" who knew little about bass set-ups have stripped the nut with over tightening it... but assuming that the truss rod has not been destroyed by goons, it should work as it was intended to; a vintage, single action rod.

I hope to see this one land in the lap of someone who can find a use for it... it is a nice guitar.

I appreciate the information and history. I can vouch for my end and certainly say that I've never maxxed the rod out in a quick manner. I've owned over 30+ basses and have been doing setups on my basses and others for 15 years.

I tried to contact Modulus about the truss rod action and as expected have had no luck. It's good to hear it from the original owner and as I've said all along the neck is straight and plays fine for me. If it wasn't for my new sadowsky this would still be my 1 bass. Great value at this point for 1150 and is still a beautiful instrument.
