FS: 1966 Harmony H27 hollowbody bass

SOLD!!!

Rare bird here, this was Harmony's two pickup, 30in short scale bass. It's almost completely original: still has the De Armond 'Golden Tone' pickups (dated October 28, 1966 - see the pics below). The strap buttons, plastic toggle switch topper and knobs have all been replaced. Remarkably both saddle and bridge covers are still here. The thin nitro finish has some checking and is worn down to the wood where your arm would rest while playing. Also missing part of the 'H' in Harmony. It's currently strung with super light D'Addario Chromes, long scale, which actually fits the bass quite well and allows for medium action. I've never played a hollowbody bass that had super low action, and this one is no exception, but it plays comfortably. Unfortunately it comes with no case or gig bag (never found one it would fit in).

It's a fun little bass that deserves to be played more than it is now. Look at that crazy tortoise shell headstock!

Asking $750 shipped CONUS. No trades. Have any other questions or want specific pics of something, just lemme know. Thanks!

The tortoise headstocks were the symbol of their "professional" (best quality) instruments. I had a Harmony Gibson Jazz guitar copy that was awesome. That one I wish I still had.

7 lbs even, according to the trusty bathroom scale.

Have way too many basses, otherwise I'd consider trades.

Thanks for the interest y'all.

Do you use light strings because the action will be too high otherwise? Is the truss rod working properly? How high is the E at the 12th fret? Great looking bass, just wondering about the action.

Correct on the light gauge strings. I tried 50-105 Chromes for about a week, but the forward bend was out of control. Once the super lights were put on the neck looked great and it takes little effort to fret now. That said, I've never bothered with the trust rod because the strings have rectified the issue. Here's a pic at the 12th fret with a ruler for reference.

with the flash it's hard to tell but is that 1/4 inch?
That's really high action, and those are the light strings?
Is the neck straight?

That would be the 1/8" mark right under the string, and the neck is straight. I should also state that I spent years playing a '78 Jazz with a warped neck, so the action on this bass is anything but high to me.

Kudos to the seller for addressing the neck/action questions in a straightforward, informative way. I really appreciate that. Nice bass.

That's not high action at all. All of my basses are basically 3/8" at the 12th fret from the bottom of the string to the fretboard (and 1/4" if you count the string). A well set up bass can handle that action even with thick strings - I should know
