FS: 1972 Fender Precision - All Original! ***PRICE DROP!***

If you look up "Vintage Bass" in the dictionary, there is a picture of this bass next to it.

I have for sale my '72 Fender Precision in the vintage 3T 'burst finish...with of course with a tort guard. When I got this bass, I had my local guitar shop go through and verify everything for me. They stated everything is original...original neck, pickups, pots, etc...and it also comes with the original logo'd hardhell case.

This thing plays and sounds like a dream. It weighs in (on my ever-so-accurate bathroom scale) at right around 8.5 lbs. There is some finish checking, which includes one long finish crack on the back that extends the length of the bass and around the top (it's a finish crack, not a structure crack). It has the player's wear in just the right spots. Serial number is 345XXX. The only thing I don't have are the covers. Neck is a "B" neck, silky smooth, and the frets are in good shape.

The first pics I'm showing are from the previous owner. I will post some of my own in a separate post.

The only reason I am selling this bass is I finally found an early 70's P-bass that has a rosewood "A" neck....I have been looking for one of these forever. Because of this, I'm not looking for any trades....unless you happen to have an early 70's P with a rosewood "A" neck you'd be willing to trade....

Price is $2000 shipped to the lower 48. Payment via PayPal or a USPS Money Order (3 of them actually since there is a $1000 limit on each one). I may be willing to ship it out of the US, so contact me with your location and we can discuss it.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Send me a PM or shoot me an e-mail to peabody59@hotmail.com.

Thanks!

Some of the things I want to point out:
  • The tip of the pickguard was broken off at one point and has been glued
  • The finish crack on the back runs the length of the back and around into the cutaway. Again, it is not a crack in the body
  • There is a small ship in the wood in control cavity.
  • There is a ding in the finish on the top horn
  • Someone wrote their name (Rusty Cook) and a date of 2-24-87 on the back of the pickguard. I'm guessing this is a previous owner because the pickguard sure looks original

This is a 38 year old bass and it has seen it's use. However, it plays and sounds unbelievable....but at the same time, I want to make sure there are no surprises.

Here are a couple of pics. Please let me know if you want to see something specific. Thanks!

I've dropped the price significantly so it is priced to sell. I don't want to miss out on the other bass.

New price is $2000 shipped to the lower 48.

So tempting.

Hey I thought with the pickup stamps they were 6 digits and the last two numbers indicate the year?

Just trying to crack the stamp code is all, not challenging you in any way!!

Very nice Scott. Wish I had the coin. I'd be all over it.

I recently sold a 72 pbass with the same sequence of numbers stamped on the pickups. In this case I believe 1= Monday 16= 16th week 2=1972.I am tempted also but have too many p basses.Good Luck!!

Leo sure had a tendency to make things complicated....

When I bought the bass, I had my local guitar shop go through it to verify everything for me and they told me it was all original, including the pickups.

I'm definitely not a true expert on vintage Fender stuff, but from what I could find, it sounds like they stopped making the grey bottom pickups in the late 70's. I also know that (as Codsack stated above) sometimes the pickups had a 4 digit code, and also from what I understand, I do believe the last digit (2) does stand for 1972.

I am going to take this bass off the market temporarily. I'm not sure if it's because of the weather or humidity or what, but I didn't like the way the finish crack was looking. I have dropped the bass off at my local guitar shop for an evaluation. I'll let you know what I find out. Stay tuned....

Pickup codes: 73 and older used 4-digit, 74 and later used 6-digit.
Gray bottom pickups were made from 1965 til 1983-ish and maybe 84.
