I have for sale an all original 1974 Fender Jazz bass in terrific condition. I kind of stumbled onto this one. I bought it (along with a '74 Mustang guitar) from a local high school. Apparently they were cleaning out a storeroom and found this Jazz (along with the Mustang) behind some tables. They are not sure how long they have been in this storeroom, but they are thinking at least 5 years....and probably more. Their guess is both the Jazz and the Mustang were purchased new by the school district in the mid '70's.
If you look up “vintage Jazz” in the dictionary, they will have a picture of this bass next to it. It has a vintage three tone sunburst finish, black pickguard, and the 70’s blocked and bound neck. It has a 4 bolt neck, and is probably one of the last 4 bolt necks Fender produced before they went to the 3 bolt design.
While the body does have a couple dings in it, overall this bass is in unbelievable shape for being 36 years old. It weighed in on the guitar shop digital scale at a very manageable 9.65 lbs. Everything is original on this beauty…neck, pickups, pots, etc….and all date to 1974. Sorry, the chrome bridge and pickups covers are long gone.
It comes with the original Fender “tail” logo tolex case. With the exception of one broken latch spring (although it still latches), it is in great shape. My guess is this bass never left the high school.
There are a couple of things I want to point out. When I got the bass, apparently the truss rod had detached from the nut in the head. I took it to my local guitar shop (Dave’s Guitar Shop here in La Crosse) and the techs there were able to reattach the truss rod without any problem. I point this out because the truss rod is a little deeper in the neck than normal, but they have assured me it is now fully functional and moves freely either way. They also said there is a little fret buzz, but not any more than most of the 70’s basses they come across.
The 2010 Vintage Guitar Price Guide gives a range of $2500 - $2900 for the '74 Jazz in sunburst with a 4 bolt neck. While I always take their prices with a grain of salt, that seems to be pretty close to what I’ve seen for an early to mid 70’s vintage Jazz in this condition. A quick search on gbase.com shows dealer listings for six '74 Jazzes with a range of prices from $3399 to $4500.
Price is $2499 shipped to the lower 48, payable via PayPal or a USPS Money Order. I am not opposed to shipping out of the US, so feel free to send me a PM or shoot me an e-mail me at peabody59@hotmail.com for a shipping quote. Sorry no trades…
Please let me know if you have any specific questions. Here are some pics...

A couple of months ago I picked up a '73 P (with an "A" neck) for a couple hundred less than I have the Jazz listed for...and the P is worth every penny.
Hey, I used to live in F'burg back in the mid to late 80's. I lived over on Hanover about a block from the battlefield. My wife worked at Mary Wash...and of course I commuted into DC....about an hour and 45 minutes each way (man I miss that). Fredericksburg is a cool town for the history...

When I went to the school to pick the Jazz and the Mustang up, I had this fantasy of opening the Jazz case compartment and seeing the covers in there......no such luck.
It did come with a woven strap...I'd be happy to throw that in if you want.

Hard for an indie rock band to get going here, chiefly because the college students never go out and seem pretty lame. Quote:

Kind of a shame it didn't get played more but given how school instruments are usually abused it's probably for the best. I could only have wished to have something that fine to play during my high school band years. |
