For sale is my very first electric bass, a Burgundy 1976 Rickenbacker 4001. I purchased this bass on satanBay in 2004
When I received it, it had two broken truss rods, a broken pickguard, had been converted to fretless, and all the chrome looked pretty bad, and it had 2 DiMarzio J pickups in it. I took it to Jason at "Too Many Guitars" in Tucker, GA, and they did an absolutely fantastic job bringing this bass back to life. The fretboard was planed a bit and new frets (6105) were installed. All electronics were cleaned up, as the previous owner did a hackjob installing the pickups. The truss rods were straightened, threaded, and fixed up with a new brass truss rod bock. All this was done in early 07.
The tech gave this bass a full, clean bill of health. There are some places around the neck near the headstock that look like cracks in the wood. The tech, after thorough examination, assured me that this cracks were in the finish only, and there is no damage to the wood or any indication that the fretboard has, is, or will separate from the neck (as can happen when the trussrods are used incorrectly).
Let me tell you, this bass is a phenomenal player. It has that great 70's Rickenbacker thin profile neck, and with flatwounds (currently strung with LaBella 760 FL's) it really just plays itself. The Toaster is a very cool pickup; pretty flat response but nice old-school flavor. The J pickup in the bridge position is very modern sounding and very full. It does not sound like a bridge pickup on a Jazz bass.
As a project bass, it's also received a new pickguard from PickGuardian, and an authentic (new) Rickenbacker toaster pickup at the neck position. The toggle switch was missing the plastic cap and has been replaced with a 9mm bullet(fmj). Works perfectly.
The finish on this bass is, generally speaking, in very good condition. Some previous owner, however, for some ungodly reason attacked the finish with some kind of sandpaper. It really looks like somebody took some 200 grit, and just wiped it around the pickguard one or two times. Simply ridiculous. If you are brave and know a little about finishing guitars, I have no doubt that these scratches can be removed/polished out. Anyway, you can see some of the fuzziness b/c of this on some of the pictures. There are a few nicks and dings here and there, but otherwise the finish is very solid.
This bass comes in a softshell case (TKL)
