FS: 1986 G&L El Toro - Rare beast - monster tone!

Sign in to disble this ad
NO LONGER FOR SALE BUT WILL KEEP THREAD OPEN JUST IN CASE

Here we have something awesome. A 1986 G&L El Toro in a delicious vintage creme color with a dark chocolatey rosewood fretboard. I picked this up on a whim, and was promptly told by the Bass Police that it has to go

I own a '95 G&L L2000 so I've always been a fan of what many consider Leo's finest instruments. But it wasn't until I played this mid-80s El Toro that I realized how truly awesome his older instruments are. Holy. Freakin'. Monster. Tone! This thing is a BEAST. It's like a Jazz bass on steroids. The pickups are "G&L bi-pole pickups" - and anybody who knows G&Ls knows that their proprietary pickups will knock you on your butt. They're loud, punchy, and awesome. This bass is a rock machine. It can pretty much sound like a Jazz, a Precision, or whatever you want. According to some info I found online, the controls are: master volume; bass and treble controls; series/parallel/bass boost switch, 3-way pickup selector.

-1 5/8" nut width.
-Weight is about 9.5 lbs.

Body is a creme/vintage white sort of color that was probably actually white at one time but has that great aged look, probably from 20+ years of playing in smokey bars. Fretboard is gorgeous dark rosewood that is pretty tightly grained, with some great-looking mother-of-pearl dot inlays. This particular bass has a natural headstock instead of the painted headstock that some El Toros have. I personally like the natural better - it's got a cool vintage gloss finish. The neck was re-finished and it appears to be a pro job. It's an awesome vintage tint gloss that appears to be just about flawless. The chrome tuners have some cloudiness that comes with age, but not any rust or pitting that I found. The body has some dings, scratches, and wear/buckle rash, particularly around the edge. There's a thin finish crack at the bridge and some checking near the butt strap button. Honestly, though, it's in great shape for a 25 year old bass and has just the right amount of "character." I am normally really picky about wear, tear, and scratches but none of the cosmetic flaws on this bass bother me - it just wouldn't be as cool if it were totally pristine.

Strings appear to be fairly new. No case, but I will put it in a standard gig bag and pack it securely.

Not interested in trades for this one. Cash is king.

825 shipped o.b.o. lower 48 USA KEEPING IT FOR NOW - TOO COOL TO SELL! I strongly prefer a domestic sale but would consider an international sale if I don't get a domestic buyer.

Photos below. All photos here (tried to capture the flaws as well as I could.)

nut width? Does this have a skinny Jazzesque neck like a Geddy Lee Jazz?

Doh. I forgot to put the weight and nut width in my original post.

1 5/8" nut width, which I *think* is the same as a Jazz. Neck is very comfortable.
Weight is about 9.5 lbs.

I'll edit the original post to include that.

Jazz width is 1 1/2" listed and often 1 7/16".

Nice bass though.

Yeah, you're right, so... 1/8" thicker at the nut than a Jazz

Hmm.

I'm thinking about keeping the body for a project and letting the neck go. Say... $275 shipped for the neck only (tuners included.)

Noooooooooo!!!!!!!!

Don't break it up! It's only original once! The El-Toro is the second-last production bass that Leo Fender designed before his death. Not many were made, these are rare and hard to find.

Someone needs to buy this, the whole bass. There is no bass in the world that can growl like an El-Toro.

Heh heh. Well the whole bass is still for sale so I'm open to offers.

However I would be curious where I can get pickups like these... I love them!

I know this probably isn't appropriate, but this bass gives me a stiffy...

You can't get them anywhere, not even from G&L. The only place you will find them is installed in an El-Toro or in an Interceptor (a bass with 80s hair-band styling).

The closest pickup on the market that I know of is the Nordstrand dual-coil. No idea how close it is tone-wise.

A lot of people are concerned about me parting it out but nobody's actually tried to buy the bass from me yet
