FS: 2009 Kinal DK5 - Fretless Bliss!

This is a rare and very beautiful 2009 Kinal DK5 fretless 5 string bass. The bass is in excellent condition with just a few minor signs of having been played. It was originally displayed at the 2009 Vancouver Guitar Show as well as the 2010 Anaheim Winter NAMM show by Michael Kinal.

This bass plays perfectly and sounds more like an upright then you would believe possible.

Here are the specs:

Body: Alder, chambered with spruce top
Neck: Bolt on with maple construction and graphite reinforcement
Scale: 34.5" - two octaves
Spacing at bridge: 17.5 mm
Width at nut: 1.75”
Width at lower bout: 13.5”
Overall length: 45.5 “
Fingerboard: Ebony
Neck markings:Upper edge fret lines and dot position markers
Pick-ups:
1) magnetic jazz Bartolini, Jazz 59J-1
2) Graph Tech Ghost Piezo in the bridge
Bartolini 3 band preamp
Controls: active preamp volume, blend, bass, treble, and mid range
Finish: Brown Sunburst
Weight: 7.5 lbs.

Includes molded custom case that was made specifically for this bass. The case was manufactured in the US and is bulletproof! There is 2” thick hard foam, “mouse fur” interior lining, a large outside pocket for cables, strings, two smaller outside pockets, a carry strap and a shoulder strap.

Asking $1,695.00 OBO shipped and insured in the CONUS

PayPal gladly accepted!

To have Michael Kinal build you a new one of these would cost about $3,500.00 and that's without the fancy wood, three piece neck or custom case!

All the photos can be see here:

If you are considering a fretless 5 string this one does a great job of bridging the difference between an electric and an upright when it comes to tone. VERY versatile with a wonderful "organic" voice!

That is some true bass porn!

You've had some gems up lately, this not withstanding. I regret not making a run on your Modulus, and I will regret not being able to snag this one too. GLWTS!!!

Oh man, wish it was 34 as well, it would be my third Kinal! Just too dialed in at 34 on my other basses. Mike makes a phenomenal bass, good luck with that!

Semi-acoustic crack

Hey Spence, I know that I probably asked this the last time, but how is the single-coil sound on it's own? If you just hammer away closer to the bridge with the mag pickup only...would you get more of "traditional" solid body fretless tone with a little more wool on the note due to the hollow-body? That would be my guess, but your tonal opinion would be appreciated.

These semi-acoustics are worse than a crack addiction for me...only a little more healthy.

Cheers to all.

Kevin, thanks for your comments and for the PM. When using just the Bartolini bridge pickup on the DK5 the bass does indeed sound much more like a solid body electric fretless bass. That's part of the beauty of this instrument. You can go either way and blend in as much or as little of either pickup as you wish. It's a VERY versatile bass!

I also want to emphasize that the Ghost piezo on this bass is by far the best sounding piezo I have ever heard. All of the others I have tried sound rather "clanky" but this one really emulates the string attack of an upright acoustic bass extremely well. If you want a fretless that can sound like an upright or a traditional electric, this is the one you want.

.........and I remeasured the string spacing and it turns out that it's actually a little wider than I thought coming in at about 17.5 mm. I have corrected my original post!

Thank you, Spence.

You know, I look at the pic and it seems like there is quilt through the front. Then the back is quilted as well. Are you sure this isn't just a Quilted Maple body with a Spruce top? Kind of like an AC model F-Bass, maybe.

Cheers.

You're killing me. The top is definitely spruce. Sides are alder, back maple.

I "might" consider a trade plus cash although my needs are pretty limited when it comes to additional basses. I would consider a 2011/2012 Fender Deluxe American P Bass.

If you have something to trade please PM me directly and we can discuss it further but I'm only interested in 34" scale basses.

Otherwise I'm still looking for a cash sale and will consider any reasonable offers.........

Bump for one of my favorite makers and for such a purty bass!

Somebody needs to buy this already. Kinals are among few that are the best in the world!

Amazing price for the quality! Too bad I'm not a fretless player.

This bass makes "fretless" pretty easy. It has the "hash marks" on the edge of the unlined board if you need them.

I may come to my senses here shortly and just keep this one but for the moment it's still available.

Sure, just go to this link:

http://www.kelleysredshoes.com/Kelle...Shoes/Red.html

While on the opening page you will hear an sampler of about 6 or 7 tunes. All but the very first tune (Love Me Like A Man), were played on the Kinal. It was a rehearsal actually so please excuse the quality and some of the playing!

DaveAceofBass 10-10-2012 03:40 PM

I still think you're nuts. What are you itching to buy? I want the bass, but won't be able to afford it until tax season.
