mpdd: Probably, in general you can tell from how it ages. The wear on this bass' finish (chips, crazing, clouding) are all indicative of nitro. Poly or vinyl usually don't age this way. They may discolor, but that's typically about it.
InterceptorFan: Sounds about right, but I did have a 1st gen SB-2 that seemed to have nitro finish. The white had aged yellow, the finish had worn through at a few points and there was crazing.
