FS: 89ish Squier HM-5 and OLP MM2

Hey Guys,

Thinning the el cheapo herd here to fund more projects. Dang projects!!

First is the fiver. I think I have learned that I'm not a 5 guy. I bought this not too long ago as an experiment, and...well....the experiment is over. So what I have here is a late 80's Squier HM-5. It actually sounds pretty darn good to my ears with the stock pups. There is a rumor about the parts from these basses that I can't confirm or deny....some have said that these basses/guitars were made shortly after the transition from Japanese makers to Korean, and that the parts were actually made in Japan, but assembled in Korea. I have no way of knowing this is true, but thats what I told myself to make me feel like I had a little better bass. lol. They really do feel like they are well made parts, though, wherever they were made. If I felt more comfortable on a 5, I would probably be keeping it.

There are some issues, though, that is going to push down the price. I am a little nervous about selling something with known issues so I will do my to describe it, so that way the future buyer will know exactly what they are getting. Please make sure you read this all if you are interested so there are no surprises.

The body has a fair amount of what looks to be pick marks. Don't know if they could "buff out", but they aren't visible unless up close to it. There is also a chip by the input jack that is showing grey (primer?). I will get better pics tonight to completely show it.

The neck is where most of the issue is. I bought the bass without seeing it in person. The neck had a pretty good relief to it. I performed the truss rod adjustment but it bottomed out. I put in a number of washers, and adjusted again. That did end up helping, but there is just a hint more relief than I would really prefer. In addition, the nut has come unglued. Its a type that I'm not really familiar with, and sits against the fretboard, on top of the headstock. Then finally, during the adjustment to the truss rod, some of the finish flaked off around the access hole. Not huge in my book, but just want to be upfront about everything. It is certainly playable, but there is no more room left to adjust the truss rod. Some lighter gauge strings might help, but I don't know for sure. The tuners work, but seem a little loose in the headstock. Could just need a tightening.

This bass had sat for a long time before I got it, and the pots were aweful. So I replaced them and wired it Vol-Blend-Tone. When I went to push the knobs back on, I accidentally blew out the back of one of the pots. So it will be freshly rewired to the new owners choice before shipping, VVT or VBT.

This can ship with one of 2 cases, or none. I only have pics of one of the cases right now.

$125 $100 Bass alone
$150 $125 Bass + hard "flight" case (musicians gear)
$175 $150 Bass + Road Runner wooden case thats black vinyl
will split shipping CONUS

Here are some pics to start, more to follow tonight.

Next up is an OLP MM2. Nice, pretty, and blue. Its in very good shape, and was my main player for a good while. There is a little 'mojo' on the exposed pole pieces. not sure where that came from, but it doesn't seem to effect anything. As you know, these OLP's are hit and miss....this one, IMHO, is def a hit. The neck feels wonderful and is very stable. There is a little weirdness in the volume and tone setup, so it might need a little rework, but it is most certainly very usable right now and sounds good.

$175 $150 Bass alone - SOLD!
$200 $175 Bass + hard "flight" case (musicians gear)
$225 $200 Bass + Road Runner wooden case thats black vinyl
Will split shipping CONUS

Some pics...these are the only I seem to have at the moment, but they cover it well. If you need some specific pics, feel free to ask!

edit: removed pics

"Flight" case pics

I would be interested in some trades, if any are available. The main thing I absolutely need now is a neck. P width, Allparts, Warmoth, USACG, or MIJ Fender or better. Fretboard color isn't essential, but I prefer darker. I would probably entertain a power amp or cabinet, but I'm really trying to get this project done, so it would have to be perfect. But...no harm in asking! Can add cash or give both basses where necessary also.

So let me know if you have any questions, and we'll go from there!

Thanks!

Could you describe the "weirdness" in the OLP?

Interested in a full bass, not just a neck?

what, you mean you can't understand the exact specifics from 'weirdness'?? lol...sorry about being vague there.

Its been a little while since i have played it now, so I'll plug it in tonight when i get home and post the specifics so they are clear. But from what I remember, it seemed to me that one volume knob had more of an effect on the overall volume than the other. The reason I am having a hard time recalling is because i was able to find a setting that worked for me great, and then i didn't touch it from there. I play at church, so its a very consistent environment. I will def post tonight after checking it out, though.

as for trade for a whole ax.....pm me what you have to offer. I'm not necessarily opposed to a complete one, but my priority really is a neck for this project.

I get where you are going on that one.

Would you be interested in a whole bass, not just a neck? If so let me know and I'll pm ya.

When I first got my OLP. I thought the wiring was messed up until I realized that one pot goes to one coil, and the other pot goes to the other coil (on the same pickup). The tone pot has an odd taper as well. I don't know if your "weirdness" goes beyond that, but....

Having said that, the neck and action on mine is sooo comfortable and with all the pots wide open, it sounds pretty damn growltastic.

So it seems that the weirdness is just a odd taper, like itchy indicated. Each volume knob rolls off very quickly, like the first 1/4 turn is most of the volume, then the rest does some, but very little. This is the same for both coils. The tone works, but its not a monster difference. So it makes me wonder if they didn't use linear pots instead of audio taper.

Anyway, that's that. Near wide open or wide open does sound pretty monstrous, though.

Have a pic of the chip on the HM-5 now.....finally. I also had a request for shipping on it with the flight case, and thought i'd share that for reference. It was from Central Illinois (here) to the greater Phoenix, AZ area. Shipping was right around $40, so $20 to the buyer. I used those same dimensions in another proprosed deal to lower Wisconsin, and that came to about $23, so $11ish to thebuyer. So depending on where you are, it would probably be between those numbers.

Also, on the HM-5, there are some scratches on the back. I tried nabbing a pic this am w\ my phone but by the time i got it on my computer, the picture was so blurry it wouldnt' do any good. I will try again to get a better one.

Edit: Almost forgot the most important part. I just ordered a warmoth neck, so cash is king. I will take reasonable offers. Heck, at this point, I'd sell the cases by themselves. lol

Great bump for a great seller. Someone pick up this OLP before I regret not getting it myself.
