It is with a heavy heart that I must list my beloved Wendler Electroacoustic 5 string bass for sale. This is the best playing 5 string I have owned, and the lightest and most comfortable of all basses, but, alas, financial necessity forces me to do so. I commissioned this bass thinking that I would never play standing again, due to back, neck, and knee issues, but Dave made it possible with this bass. The Specs are as follows: - 34" scale
- 21 fret Pao Ferro fretboard
- Aged Maple/Walnut 5 piece neck
- Cedar body
- Pao Ferro headstock laminate
- Pao Ferro tailpiece with wooden/brass bridge
- EMG-J pickups (original custom passive EMG J type pickups will also be included)
- Hipshot Ultrlight tuners
- Bone nut
- 17.5mm string spacing at the bridge
- weighs in around 6.5lbs-7lbs, depending on which scale I use
I had Dave set it up with rather low action, but because of the aged neck (Dave got it from Peavey before he left, so it was at least 10 years old when he built the bass about 1.5 years ago) there is no buzzing or dead/choked out notes (but I am very strict with my right hand attack).
The original custom EMG passive pickups and bridge piezzo were too woody sounding for me, so I put in the active EMG's, and it has, IMO, the perfect balance between warm/woody and clear and punchy tones. However, I will include the original pickups, and you can put them back in and rewire Dave's proprietary Magpi piezzo/magnetic blend circuit (which is quite well known in certain guitar circles for its acoustic-like tone).
The most special thing about this bass is how comfortable it is to play on long sets. The weight and the comfortable/fast neck make for pain free playing!
This bass would cost about $1600 new, but I will reluctantly part with her for $800 plus shipping. Wendler padded gigbag included.
More pictures to follow.

There are more active/better known TBers than me who can attest to the quality of Dave Wendler's instruments. In fact, I got this bass because of their reassurances, and they were correct!
The controls are located beneath the raised pick-guard, but because they are all active, I have only had interference in one really ancient room that I regularly play in, and that is only when I use it with my Boss pedal, through in-ear monitors (hardly audible through the mains/bass rig). I can honestly say that this is as quiet as the Zon Sonus was.
It balances very well on a Comfort Strappe (sp?). No neck dive (which I was concerned about, having such a light body, but the design is well thought out).
There is some clear coat dulling from where the upper horn rubs against my shirt, but I had a hard time capturing it on camera.
There is some belt rash from ye ol' belt buckle, but, again, it was not easy to get on camera.

I should have some sound clips (of how it sounds now and how it used to/can sound with the original pickups) in a day or two.

Just Friends and New Song (not recognized-track 1) were recorded by micing a Carvin 8X10 cab (don't ask me why, that is what el engineer wanted to do).
The one which slightly resembles Chameleon was played with the original passive pickups, and was recorded live straight into a Behringer mixer and then into a cassette deck http://www.myspace.com/malekpallie
