The time has come to let my Brute go! I’ve enjoying playing, upgrading, and modifying this wonderful bass but it boils down to the fact that I play my 35 inchers more and I need the money!
This is a wonderful example of the early Brutes which received extra attention from Kevin Brubaker on the setup, including the fretwork. This one started life as a JJX, and is now an MJX with upgraded Lakland USA pickups and an EMG preamp. The tuners have also been upgraded to Gotoh. Tuners
Upgraded to black Gotoh tuners. Frets
Zero fretwear. Fretwork is some of the best I’ve seen, because Kevin Brubaker did it. No sharp ends, in fact there are no ends. The ends of the frets are filled with wood putty, much like you see on Music Man basses. Truss Rod
Fully functional, dual action truss rod. Weight
Don’t know, but these normally go around 9.5-10 lbs which feels about right. Pickups
Lakland MM humbucker at bridge, Lakland noiseless single coil at neck. Mini switch for humbucker allows switching to inner coil, outer coil, or parallel coils. This is the same setup as on a Lakland 55-94. Pickguard
This bass started life as a J/J and I later got the pickguard to make it a J/MM. The original J/J pickguard is included. Preamp
EMG BQS Control, Vol,vol, bass, treble, mid w/concentric frequency control. 9 volts. Bridge
Stock, which I modified for through body stringing on the B string only. This is a life saver if you don’t use tapered strings. At one time I had a Hipshot bridge on this bass and you can see the mounting holes in the body through the unused string-through holes in the stock bridge. I was going to plug/paint them but I figured the next owner may want to convert it to string through for all strings or put a Hipshot back on it in which case the pilot holes are already there for you! Body
Good shape overall. There are nicks and dings, and there is a spot on the top near where your arm rests that looks like it took a bump and cracked the finish. I was able to shoot some glue in there to keep it stable. You can’t feel the cracks and it’s not going anywhere. No wood exposed anywhere. This just has normal stuff you see on any bass that has been used and played. As stated, the pickup mounting area has been highly modified underneath the pickguard so it’s not the prettiest place in the world, but that’s like saying the muffler underneath your car is not very pretty. I’m pricing this at $625 which I think is very fair considering the price of the tuners, pickups, and preamp. I will also include a generic gig bag. I will ship it to the EST time zone for free. Anywhere else will be $35 extra.
Are you looking for a project bass?
If you have your own pickups and preamp, I can wiggle on the price if you don’t want the Lakland/EMG setup. Are you looking for a KILLER project bass?
One thing I planned to do with this bass was to make it a one of a kind (even more than it already is!) with dual MM humbucker pickups. I had Kevin Brubaker make a custom pickguard, and I worked on it but never finished this project. I even have another matching Lakland pickup. I did it with some test pickups to see what it would look like and it looks completely bas@$$. It will take some work to finish this, and I just never found the time to do it. I can give you more info on what would need to be done. I also have pictures of the pickguard, and what it looks like with HH pickups. Please contact me for more info.
The pickguard and pickup set me back quite a bit, but if you buy the bass I will sell the custom HH pickguard and Lakland MM pickup for an extra $135.
Here’s a chance to get a taste of the Brute magic, only 10x better thanks to the killer upgraded pickups! These have some of the best necks you'll ever play, the 19mm spacing feels like home, and if you prefer 34" scale..well..look no further. Lots of pictures here: http://sdrv.ms/13HPnDN
