Hi all - here's a "poor man's boutique fretless 6er". It's a red Cort Curbow 6 that I did the defretting / filling / sanding on myself, then brought to luthier Paul Iverson for the fingerboard shaping and
finishing.
[NOTE - CHANGE OF DETAILS: needed the bass for a session so I restrung it - now sporting fresh D'Addario XLs rather than the TI JRs, although I'm happy to throw the TIs in the case as well]
The new SGD pickups nailed what I asked for - the opposite of "wimpy" and "anemic" - fat, punchy and warm. Paul installed one at the original position and routed for a second between that and the bridge to grab more "J" style tones, and then filled the gap between them with a block.
The switches are designed to allow you to split the coils separately to get a "virtual" pickup between the two real ones, but it's trivial to rewire it as a standard 2-pickup. David can suggest other options as well.
Defects: this was my first defret, and although I took my time (and lots of pro advice) there's a small smear of Krazy glue on the finish above the 12th fret and some runoff on the heel (my bad) and a small cover is missing from the back of the worm gear on one tuner. Aside from that, she's good to go.
I've had a wonderful time reintroducing myself to the world of fretless with this bass in the last year or two (hopefully I can post some gig clips), and as a direct result I'm now going to jump further (much further) up the budget ladder. Don't be fooled, though - this little CC is absolutely nothing to be ashamed to walk into a pro gig or session with, as you'll hear from the recordings [SOUNDCLIPS IN POSTS #2 and #18].
I put a fair bit of time and cash into this one (the strings and pickups alone were over $300) so we'll start this at $525 shipped CONUS/Canada. Will ship in a (cheap) gigbag.

Nice taste in basses! Good luck with the sale. |

I still might - I've been going through a "refresh my tone" period where I've changed out basically everything in my chain between my hands and the audience, right down to patch cords, just so I don't get completely bored with hearing myself... |

[I do believe I'm talking myself out of selling this - heck, I'm even buying a Sadowsky preamp for it tomorrow.] |
