FS: Custom Master-built Dakota Red Jazz Bass!!

Sign in to disble this ad
This sale pains me greatly. I just had my custom dream jazz bass built for me by the renowned bass luthier Ben Lindsey, but impossible financial circumstances forces me to sell ($1500 clutch failed last week, found out my job is getting shipped overseas, need down payment for moving into new house, etc. ).

So here she is. She is very much like a Fender Custom Shop jazz specially built for me by builder-extraordinaire Ben Lindsey, except that Ben gives the best customer service in the business, bar none! Ask anybody who has dealt with him. It's a very personal experience. His goal is to make your dream bass, and he does just that. This is my dream jazz bass. I am very saddened to have to sell this. I was planning on keeping it around for many years to come, but I just can't afford that at the moment.

Specs:

-70's pickup spacing
-7.8 lbs and perfectly balanced!
-ash body/rosewood board bound and blocked
-10" (9.5"? I forget) radius fingerboard that gets really low action
-Lollar pickups
-passive electronics
-light relic job, maybe 2/10
-Gotoh lightweight tuners (Hipshot detuner key also relic'd included separately)
-Dakota red nitro relic'd paint job with Olympic White undercoat
-Tight neck pocket
-chrome pickup covers, both neck and bridge (not pictured)

This is one very responsive bass to touch. It has a fat organic sound that really spanks when slapped. The neck pickup gets one of the best P-bass sounds I've heard out of a jazz pickup and the bridge pickup balances it out perfectly and adds a little bite.

This bass is very light at 7.8 lbs and balances perfectly on the strap; it barely feels like there's a bass there. Very rare in a vintage jazz bass, IME, or any type of jazz bass for that matter and I've played a lot of them.

This bass is on par or beyond Fender Custom Shop quality (and I like those), and you get the personal experience of Ben any time you feel like calling or if he calls you just to chat. He will work to make you happy at any cost.

Here are some pics I took today with my iPhone as well as a few Ben took on the workbench after finishing up with it not long ago. It looks a little brighter red in my cellphone pics than it does in real life, but not quite as dark as the few from Ben's workshop. It's right in between; it just depends on the lighting, so I guess you can say both are accurate, sort of.

From Ben's shop:

From my iPhone:

Here, you can see how tight the neck pocket is.

I paid $1850 (a Fender Custom Shop with these specs would cost nearly twice as much) and haven't had much more than a week on her before my financial situation slammed into my life like a wrecking ball. I'm asking for only $1550 shipped to ConUS with very nice G&L gig bag. Outside of US, buyer pays actual shipping.

Let me know if you have any questions. This is an incredible bass at an incredible price! My loss is your gain.

Yeah, the headstock is blank on the front and ready for any decal you may or nay not want to put on there. Ben painted the bass himself at the spray booth in his shop; it's what he does for a living and has been doing his whole life. I'm not sure exactly where he gets his pieces from, but I do know he hand selects them for the best possible quality. If you'd like, I can send you his contact info so that you can get much better answers to those questions from the man himself.

Ben is great- don't hesitate on this one- I have 2 jazz style basses built to 60s specs that are better than my real one was...and he built me a custom bass which compares very well to my Fodera... his jazz bass parts come from musickraft I belive- but he does a ton of hand shaping- and the finish/relic work is outstanding- my 65 copy looks VERY real...down to the hand done razor blade checking that you'd have to have x-ray vision to tell wasn't real.

Thanks, it's a bit rough, gotta be honest. Money comes and goes. At least I can make someone else lucky for now.

If I was wealthy (or needed a jazz bass), I'd buy this and give you the option to buy it back later, with the caveat that the price goes up 25 dollars a year, and maybe a 5 or 10 year limit on a buy-back.

I hope no one buys this and you are forced to keep it. I have sold basses to pay bills, it's no fun and in the end you still have bills and no bass. Never again.

Haha, I get what you're saying, and a part of me wants that, too. But in this case though, if I don't sell it then I'll be homeless soon. It's really pretty bad.

Well then I take it back...I hope you get the funds you need! Good luck with the sale. There will always be another cool bass to buy, I suppose.
