Here's an immaculate black on black SX P/J bass with a Darkstar pickup installed in the P position. The bass sounds incredible by itself – the tech who installed the Darkstar ( www.crislerguitar.com) couldn’t believe the build quality. The Darkstar is everything you’ve read about – thumpy, clear, responsive to touch and LOUD. This bass is a vintage tone machine. Alder body with a rosewood board along with the Darkstar gives great tubby bottom.
The pics: The pickguard needs to be replaced. This is the original guard and the ears from the original P pickup are visible. Two options here: send the guard to Jeannie pickguards and he’ll copy it without the earholes, OR he sells a thumbrest for the Darkstar. I believe that might cover the earholes.
I couldn’t get all the dust off the body for the close-ups. There are three indentations on the back about 1mm across and not deep at all. I couldn’t get them to photograph. Other than that the bass is perfect – no cymbal dings or belt rash. All that black with all that chrome sure is purty. A chrome Badass bridge sure would look nice…
I have $500 into it. I’ll ship it to your door for $500 including a Ritter gigbag. If you’ve been looking to try a Darkstar equipped bass, here’s the only opportunity that won’t cost you thousands.
I prefer a Postal MO but will take Paypal. No trades - Stupid IRS.

Bass $140
Pickup $188
Labor $125
Bag $35
Shipping $25
Looks like I'm losing $13 on the deal (!). In all honesty I was hoping someone would rather pay to have something already completed than go the project route, which can be a PITA. It IS kind of a specialty piece - I figured I'd have to be patient. Someone out there wants to play a Darkstar bass without doing all the legwork I did. I know there's a market out there for this - I hope...

It took months to get this project bass playable - mainly wait time granted, but months nonethless. I'm not looking for a buyer who is bargain shopping - that person would probably undertake the project themselves. Maybe my prospective buyer doesn't exist, or doesn't exist on TB anyway. I say two weeks to verify if my head is way up my ass or not.

Losing money on any sort of instrument is no fun whatsoever, and any way you slice it, $500 is a cheap price to pay for an instrument that has a Darkstar.....at least as far as I've ever seen. Plus it comes with a gigbag? I don't see a downside here.....but then again I'm a pushover when it comes to P basses that aren't normal. |

The Darkstar is indeed MUCH hotter than the J pup. It's not unusable, however, and you can dial in a little of that burp sound when you need it. Mixing in some of the J pup yields that phase cancellation sound also. Soundwise, the J pup is usuable and handy to have. Makes a nice thumbrest too!
