I bought this new a couple years ago, life has not allowed me to play it much, I guess I can't say it is mint with mods. It is in wonderful condition. I played it again today and it is really special.
I don't think you can find these around anymore, you would be hard pressed to find one for sale now anywhere online.
It is 35" scale, with 24 mega reachable frets.
Here is a thread of a recent sale of one with photos and some talk about the peizos/electronics etc:
signiture brian bromberg B2 dean 5 string
I don't care what anybody says, the peizos are so unbalanced and uncontrollable with volume jumping all over either being too loud or too soft or blurry sounding... The 18v configuration dies very quickly, and one of the batteries is placed in the electronics bay just sitting on the wires while the other is in its own compartment.
Because of that, I decided to upgrade this bass because I knew I was holding an awesome bass body with an awesome neck and awesome action and awesome playability and awesome looks and awesome balance etc...
After cutting off and ripping out the very messy rats nest jam packed and already returned for repair under warranty cheap electronics, I installed a new Bartolini NTMB 3 band EQ (5.3) preamp system. Bartolini NTMB - 3 Band Preamp (9v) (Treble, Mid and Bass, Boost and Cut)
5.3 A/P -
2 Pickup - 5 knob , 1 Switch Configuration
Controls:
- Volume (push/pull active-passive)
- Volume
- Treble
- Mid
- Bass
- Mid Frequency Selector Switch
I also added a Chrome Schaller Roller-3 way adjustable Bridge and Chrome hardware.
One of the most wonderful things about this is the feel of the string spacing up at the brass nut, just the way a 5 string should be!
I had it at 16.5 mm string spacing, then I bought a G&L and wanted to match its 17mm spacing and the neck took it without being too close to the edges up high on the neck.
Now this beast is just plain wicked. I have never played a 35" so fast or so articulated. The tones and playability make this the bass I thought I was buying at first. From slapping and popping, hammering and pull offs, harmonics, to its mega growl and tonal options, this bass can do it all. The relatively lite weight well balanced body with a straight and solid sweet neck-thru design make this bass very sinful!
Which leads me to the reason I am selling it. I now realize I cannot play this beast in church. The visual appearance of this bass might take the focus off the reason for being there. And its tone just wants to rule.
At an original price of over a Grand, in perfect condition, with over $200 in upgrades which I know some of you would have done yourselves, I just didn't want to try to sell this up on the big E. I figure there is a TBer who will appreciate this re-creation.
The ONLY problem I can think to list is: Since I have lowered an already great action string height, the bridge pickup gets slightly rubbed by the G string when fretting it up past like the 9th or 10th fret, beyond the 16th it is deadened because the screws in the pup will not allow it to go lower. I don't know if it is because the pup is just sitting as low as it can in the cutout, or if the screw length is not allowing it.
I have different pup screws that might solve the problem. Or I could just raise the string a hair but that would throw off the perfection... Hopefully the pics show the fantastic action on this!
I did paint some gold barely noticable dots on the side of neck to help me with fret position in darker situations since there is nothing on the fretboard other than the inlay "B2" at the 12th. These could be rubbed off.
I have been tweaking this post and at the risk of sounding like a salesman I can say, I could go Guitar Center right now in M'ville Indiana, and I could not pick anything off the wall that would blow this away in looks, sound, feel and of course price. I have bought and then sold many basses over the last couple years. Any upgrades I did were received very well by all buyers. All were packed and shipped expertly, all great deals, and all as described. I can show that 100% positive feedback profile if needed.
Or, I can just refer you to my Feedback on the Bass Sale I did here on TB some weeks ago. I am now not playing it at all here, I will work to fix the G string touching the pup thing. So it is on ice till it ships or I just decide to keep it. I can give my phone and personal info, we can Talk Bass, and I can offer a guarantee. If I ship this to you, and it does not blow you away. Then you can ship it back and I would return the original PayPal amount and we would both loose the shipping cost for this experiment. Shipped UPS Ground ONLY to the Lower 48 CONUS w/ Insurance included Attachment 99891 Attachment 99892
