This has been my main axe for a few years. Very nice playing neck. The action is fairly low with no buzz and just a really smooth playing bass. If I understand the serial numbers correctly, the bass was made in 2001 (serial number z0155xxx). Comes with Delano JC5HE pickups installed ($236 new from
Delano Bass Pickups ) AND the original pickups boxed. To my ear the stock pickups were too compressed in the low end so I purchased these because they have a very wide frequency response. I really like the sound…clear low bottom end that cuts through the mix better than the stock pickups. Still sounds like a Jazz but a bit more modern sounding. Semi-transparent white shows the grain pattern through the finish…NICE finish! The bass is 100% functional but has a few blems described in detail here (and shown in photos):
-The most obvious blem is a spot on the top side of the lower horn. The damage goes through the finish and there is a small section of raw wood visible. I can’t tell you how this happened as I purchased the bass used with this blem.
-The backside of the bass (where it rests against your belly) has a pink tint to it in the middle. It is strange and again I can’t tell you how it got there.
-There is a hair-line crack in the wood below the B string tuner. I know this was a common issue with the 5 in-line Jazz necks and I’m sure there is a thread or two about it here on TB. If anyone has the link to such a thread, please feel free to post it. Again, this blem was there when I purchased the bass about three years ago. I immediately had it inspected by the local luthier (
Oriskany Guitars - Acoustic Guitars by Luthiers Johanna Mutti and Curtis Rockwell ) who does all of my work. He said that it appeared stable and that he would just keep an eye on it. If it progressed, he would recommend fixing it to stop the spread (an easy fix in his opinion). In the three years I have had the bass it has not changed so I haven’t worried about it.
-There is a small dent in the back of the neck at about the 8th fret. It is very small, but noticeable if your thumb lands there.
-Lastly, there are four small finish blems on the treble side of the neck where the fretboard meets the neck near the top four frets. They look to me like the finish came off in those spots. I honestly didn’t notice this issue until inspecting the bass for this sale. I always keep some clearance between my hand and the underside of the neck so I have never felt these while playing.
Bottom line, this bass is a NICE player! Bass includes a nice SKB hard-shell case and will be well packaged in a new Carvin bass box. Why am I selling it? Well, despite really liking this bass, I have some shoulder discomfort and have been on a quest to find lighter basses. This bass is extremely well balanced but not light at 10.8 lbs on the bathroom scale. I was going to keep it anyway because it plays so nice but I need to pay for a new mountain bike! After watching a few of these sell on TB I’m estimating the bass with original pickups and case are worth about $700. The Delano’s were about another $250 new (including shipping) and are worth at least $150 used bringing the total value to $850. Motivated to sell so I’m asking $800 shipped East of the Mississippi, $825 West of it.
Paypal or MoneyOrder OK. I'm in central PA so I could also meet someone between here and Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, or D.C.
