FS: Fender CIJ 1951 Precision RI

While I love this bass, it's time to let it go to an owner who can appreciate it more fully.

This is a Fender 1951 Precision Bass re-issue, Crafted in Japan (CIJ), serial number #S015924. TBer General Electric has been kind enough to date this bass to having been made in 2005-2006.

The pickup is a Seymour Duncan SCBP-1 Vintage, which is a no-noise single coil that has a nice midrange bump not seen in the stock PU.

The body finish is semi-transparent "school bus yellow", which is Fender's approximation of how the classic butterscotch blonde finish has aged on real 1951 basses. There's a beautiful wood grain visible and a nice, thick coat of gloss covering everything. Slab body, just like the good old days. Strings are through the body and the bridge is the classic two-saddle version, made out of metal rather than Bakelite.

The neck also has a deep gloss coating and is probably not for those who only like matte or raw finishes. There is a beautiful skunk stripe and the truss rod adjustment happens at the neck joint end. Tuners are "reverse," just like the original '51 Precision. I have D'addario Chrome flatwound strings installed.

Also comes with Schaller straplocks and a beautiful brown Levy's leather strap.

There are no major blemishes, but the cosmetic issues are as such:
  • The pickguard has the standard dull scuffs from pick playing.
  • The fretboard has nicks under the A an D strings at the very end of the neck, probably from some overboard slapping from the previous owner. This doesn't affect playability and could possibly be repaired by a luthier for ~$100, if you wish.
  • There is some extremely light buckle rash on the rear of the bass by the small horn. I couldn't even take a photograph of it. You need to hold the bass angled and against a light source to notice it. You could probably buff it out with some 3M products in minutes.

I'm not interested in trades - I needs me somes cash! I ship CONUS by insured UPS Ground and accept PayPal only. The bass will be in a gig bag and then well-packed.

Looking for $560 shipped! Thanks!

I this that this is one of the newer ones. The serial numbers can be kinda confusing. I don't recall any of the old ones being yellow and they had a more realistic blonde finish (more of a white blonde)

However this is still a great price and I love that pickup. If I had the $ I'd buy it off of you. I really miss mine and it looked killer with a white pickguard.

That would make sense since I've also read about the color differences but I haven't seen a verified older model to go off of. So take the dating based on the serial number as what you will.

Either way, it's still a killer bass with a great sound! Let's bump it and shoot for $650 shipped!

An evening bump and now she's yours for the low, low price of $599 shipped!!!! I am reluctant to go any lower, this price is a steal!!

I know the 51 P isn't for everyone, but it really does play and sound wonderful!

It says "Crafted in Japan" in black on the neck heel. The serial number is right below, printed in silver.

Sorry! it says CIJ in the title too... anyway if its Crafted S-serial its 2005-2006, that link from fender is gone... was working a month ago at least... it should be MADE in japan to be mid 90's (those earlier models also have larger string thru body holes) anyway i dont see it like something less desirable, japanese quality its great and concistent thru decades... dont wanna flood the thread with my japanese fenders pics
btw, how better does it sound with the bassline pickup? thanks

Thanks for the info!

I don't know how it sounded with the original pickup, as I bought it with the SD. From what I've heard the Duncan adds more mid-end and reduces hum, which the original pickup was notorious for.

I have a local sale pending so this is on hold until Thursday, but if you're interested, don't hesistate to PM me!

I had the SD pickup in mine. Its heads above the original pickup. The original pickup is noisy and I always thought it was kind of bland. The SD has a really nice midrange and sounds really gnarly with rounds. Great for rock, punk, etc. I preferred having dead rounds on mine and also had flats on it too. Did the vintage thump thing really well.

The bass sounds great with either fingers or a pick. Because of the pickup's location (or maybe its the type) it doesn't do most of the harmonics very well. It simply doesn't pick them up. It picks up the 5th, 7th, and 12th fret stuff no problem just don't expect to play Portrait of Tracy. But honestly how many people play around with harmonics in a band?

If you wanna hear mine, when I had it, with dead nickel rounds

The track is called VH1 Short.
