This is a lovely, striking bass. It's one of the newer versions of the model with the ever-so-slightly deeper but thinner bodies, and the more gently curving cut-away. The Dao wood grain is tough to capture in a picture. As opposed to some of the blonder editions, this is a deep, rich honey-amber with a fantastic luster when you look at it from different angles. The amber color and the abalone rosette play off each other perfectly. You'll be impressed with the fit and finish, and the weight. It feels like a significant instrument in your hands.
The tone and volume are true to the legendary status of this bass, and the current string set-up provides a nice, woody thump. It projects easily as well as my old Breedlove Atlas and has a more versatile tonal range. It's also much more comfortable to play.
Condition: I'd rate it 8.5 out of 10. There is a small dent on the back of the neck near the headstock, along with a tough to notice scratch right next to it. The back has some very light buckle rash. And the nut was set slightly off center at the factory. The top, sides, frets and fingerboard have no apparent scratches or wear. Honestly, this is me being nit-picky. The base presents very well and definitely turns heads.
I'm the second owner. The first was an older, bluegrass playing gent who purchased the instrument from a small music store in Kentucky.
Ask questions. I'm happy to answer.
PS- The second picture makes the back look matte. It is indeed the same color and finish as the front.
