FS: Fretless '79 Fender P-Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I bought this bass with grandiose excitement several years back, but it has unfortunately been collecting dust.

This bass is not all original. I bought it in rough shape from Vintage Guitar Shop in Hollywood, CA. It had already been refinished when I picked it up, so I decided to put a little work into it.

Info in the thread below ....

Should I mod my 70's P Bass

If you don't want to read the thread here is the list of updates

- 3TS Refinish by Pat Wilkins
- Lindy Fralin P-Bass Pickups
- Fretboard Smoothing (Not sure of the official term)
- New Nut
- The knobs are aftermarket (the original ones kind of sucked)
- Thumb rest is aftermarket
- Bridge Cover is aftermarket

I will include the original pickups and pots with the bass.

Here she is ...

Other pictures can be found in the Photobucket Album

$1200 $1050 Shipped to the lower 48. Local sales will obviously pay less. I'm in LA.

EDIT: I forgot to include the that the G-string Tuner is bent. It is functional, but that was the condition that it was received in.

Man that bass is reminiscent of Paul Carmichael's old fretless 'P' he used with Allan Holdsworth I.O.U back in the early 80s !

It does seem that maple is more of a popular choice. The rosewood does go well with the 3TS though.

I don't like burst finishes, and I don't particularly like Fenders in general... but gatDANG, that bass is just sexier than a GoDaddy.com commercial marathon. I'm almost glad I can't see it in person — this month's mortgage payment would be in danger...

The neck is 1 5/8" at the nut. As far as the weight, my kitchen scale maxes out at 11 lbs. and it is more than that. This is definitely one of the late 70's heavy ash basses.

Beautiful bass man. What was the purpose of the fretboard smoothing? Did it need a bit of work done to it?
Also interested if there are side dot markers on the neck - can't tell from the photos.

Fretboard smoothing = re-planing?

If so, I assume it was to remove string marks and wear on the fingerboard?

Cheers

Andy

Yes ... that is what it was called. Replaning. There was fingerboard wear from roundwound strings, so the replaning smoothed that out so it's as good as new.

And yes there are side dot markers on the neck in black.

There was no OHSC when I purchased this bass. It had as soft case that came with it that I will ship with the bass.
