I bought this bass a few months back here on TB because I wanted to try something different. I'm a Gibson guy and haven't really ever been into Fender, but I wanted to give the “P Bass” sound it's fair shot. First let me say, this is the BEST P Bass I have ever heard/felt/played...but it's still just not my thing.
Now a little about the bass:
Looks like this bass has belonged to a few fellow TBers. Everybody says this is an '85 but the serial # is B015xxx which pre-dates the first '85 # according to G&L's website. All original with the exception of the matte black pickguard. I also replaced 3 of the saddle screws which were missing when I bought it.
34” scale. The neck back is sanded and oiled. 1-5/8" at the nut.
Body definitely has some dings, but nothing major for a player.
Original Schaller pup.
9 lbs.
Comes with a brand new Road Runner HSC.
Currently strung BEAD with D'Addario Chromes but no mods were done, so you could easily put it back to standard if you like.
I'm asking $750 which is less than I have into it.
As far as trades, I'll consider any passive Gib/Ep with a 34” scale. +/- $
I'm also interested in a hollowbody. Jack Casady or maybe something vintage? Let me know what you've got.
I'd really love an Orange Terror Bass 500w. Any trade offer with one of these will take priority.
Local deals preferred but we can talk shipping.
This is my first sale on TB, but let me assure you. I'm a dependable dude. I'm easy to work with and I've tried to do my best to give you all of the information I have. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
THANKS!!!
-Adam

My favorite neck of all time.

Maybe a former owner would know?

And as I understand it, Leo had a tendency to grab whatever wood was lying around

As to the body wood: I believe these were still being made of maple when the first split-coil models rolled off the line. When the MFD split pup appeared, I think they were mostly poplar and, even later, alder. Of course, as the owner suggests, true GLeeks know there are exceptions to every such rule. Tough to say on this one whether that's maple or poplar but I'd bet on maple. This one is especially interesting, as the body appears to be a 3-piece given that stripe that appears down the middle in the pic of the back.
Some very useful additional information on this very model can be found here: http://www.ggjaguar.com/sb-1-85.htm
Bump for a great bass!

Thanks for the info and kind words!
This bass is definitely unique, in that, it's early in Leo's experimental, transitional phase.
The volume knob is really more of a 2nd tone knob. Huge output when full on. More classic P thump at half.
Definitely not just "another P"

Is the neck flat? Or is it more of a jazz bass neck? |
