I bought this a couple of years ago with a recording project in mind, but it never came to be. This needs to go to someone who'll play it and love it for what it is....
1964-ish Epiphone Newport. Same pup, wood, sound and construction as a Gibson EB-0. Mahogany neck and body, short scale, set neck. They changed to this "batwing" headstock in 1963, and they went to the different HB pup in 65-66, so I figure 64 is a safe bet.
HUGE tone, lots of Howlin' Wolf thump-thump. Super light. Original guard. Non-original HSC (the originals were crappy chipboard, so the TKL that I'm gonna send this in is a major improvement in terms of protection.)
Thumb rest is gone. Cover is gone. Mute is gone. And I'm pretty sure it's a refin.
Please note: The wiring is a little goofy It works fine, just a bit ugly. The pup lead was cut at some point and, presumably to give a little slack, somebody spliced in a 2" chunk of speaker wire. It's soldered, then covered with electrical tape. It works fine, just ugly. I don't think the pup was replaced, because it looks just like the pup from the gibsonbass.com website (see
this link for comparisons).
PRICE: These are going for $1700+ all over the net in the original common finish. More for custom colors.
I got this cheap, and will pass a good deal on to one of youse: $900 OBO shipped in the Lower 48.
Trades: No amps or cabs (got plenty of those). Will consider Laklands, Fenders, Gibsons, G&L's. Maybe a nice Stingray or Sterling? Shoot it past me -- you never know....
Full set of pix are
here and you should look at all of them since I tried to document everything I'm saying above.
