FS/FT: 60's Univox Custom Hollowbody

This is quite a rare bass... a 1960's Univox "Custom" hollowbody. This bass, as it currently is, plays and sounds great, but it wasn't always this way.

When I got this bass the pickups were missing and the neck had a nice bow in it with a stripped truss rod. I heated the neck, pulled the truss rod out and put in a new one from StewMac. (It was a while ago and I don't remember if I used one of the channel truss rods as used in the older Japanese made instruments or if I used a double expanding rod.) Anyway, the neck is straight now. One "problem" did develop during the process of heating the fingerboard to take it off and get to the truss rod, and that is the "mother of toilet set" inlays melted some and a few of them have disformed (see photo) and a couple of them now have holes that melted in them.

I put in Schaller Bassbucker pickups (with flat plastic surrounds big enough to cover the original pickup routes.) These are four wire pickups so I put a push/pull coil tap switch on each volume knob. The bass came stock with a three position "Tele" style switch on the lower cutaway, and each of the pickups is run through that. Total sounds include each pickup in humbucker mode, each pickup in single coil mode and any combination of these with the toggle switch in the middle position. Each pickup has it's own tone control.

The bass still has it's original tuners (probably it's weakest link). It is short scale (30 1/2"). The body has a bit of flame under the sunburst finish. There are two smile screw holes in the top (visible in the photo of the top), one above and between the pickups close to the "f hole" and one close to the edge, directly above the neck pickup. There are also two holes on the original pickguard where there was once a thumbrest attached.

This is a cool looking and cool sounding bass. With the Schaller pickups I am sure it sounds better then it did with it's original pickups.

I don't have a case for this bass...in fact I doubt if it ever did have a case, but it will be shipped double boxed with lots of wrapping. Here is your chance to own an inexpensive, very unusual bass.

$500 shipped in CONUS. Will listen to trade offers if something really strikes me.

What kind of trades are you looking for? How did the neck repair hold up? Was this your first truss rod repair?

I will listen to trades, but have nothing in mind at moment. Worst I can do is say "not interested." Would really like to sell the stuff I am posting, but one never knows what someone else may offer.

I have replaced a couple dozen truss rods. I usually add carbon fiber stiffing rods along with the new truss rod, but can't remember if I put them in this neck or not. Seems to have held up fine. Did it prior to my move to Michigan, which was 5 1/2 years ago.
