Currently I have two G&L L-2500 Tribute 5-string basses:
Blueburst with maple neck
Black with rosewood neck
The blueburst was purchased brand new from G&L. The blackie was purchased from another TalkBass member in fine standing. Both have been set up professionally by my bass tech guru, and have given me nothing but reliability and tone out the wazoo! Way too many guitarists and other musicians compliment me on how good my bass sounds through my system or the venue's PA.
Both are in fine condition, which means they aren't mint, cause I'm a regularly-gigging bassist around town in three bands, which means there's some belt buckle rash on the back, but no dings or scratches. They either live in a gig bag or on my shoulder with strap locks.
But I think I want to try a different direction...
I want tone like Billy Sheehan (DLR, Mr. Big, Vai) and/or Marcel Jacob (Talisman, Yngwie), and I'm just not able to dial it in with these Tributes. In lieu of dropping $1800-$2000 for a Yamaha Attitude or $xxxx for a black Fender modded bass like Marcel's, I'm wondering what else is out there that might get me closer to that sound.
Hell, I'm not sure what path to take to get my "that's it!" bass, but I figure $1000 for both basses is a fairly reasonable price.
Any ideas on which bass would be good to research? Custom job?
Is a grand asking too much? Not enough?
I appreciate y'all's constructive thoughts and advice. Much obliged....
