History:
I bought this 2005(?) Lakland Skyline Darryl Jones 5 here on TalkBass a few years ago and it's been my number one bass ever since. I liked it so much that I sold my Stingray5. It's just always had that
something, you know? But try as I have, the 35" scale is hard on my left hand and is causing me to seek out another jazz bass.
Details:
There are two things in particular that must be mentioned before the rest of this bass is described, both of which are shown above. First, within a week of getting this bass I made the unfortunate mistake of standing up too fast with the bass in hand. The ceiling fan lashed out at Black Pearl, giving her the small chip you see. I was devastated (still am). Second, about a year ago I was playing for a church that had a heavy backdrop curtain. At the end of the service they started pulling the curtain and before I could yell to stop or reach her, the bass was pulled down and hit the edge of the stage. The result was the ding you see on the neck, right at the headstock. What you see is a pure testament to the build quality of Lakland. I have never had any issues with the neck, not before or after the fall.
Beyond these things I think you'll see the superb finish of the bass is an amazing black sparkle pearl. I took photograph after photograph to try and show just how clean the finish is front and back. The bass is currently equipped with the Aero pickups and is passive. I have the Audere preamp that came with the bass when I first installed, but I much preferred the open, dynamic voicing of the pickups and thus contacted Lakland for the passive setup. You'll see the pickguard reflects a gap between it and the control panel, as Audere did not offer a DJ option when I purchased this bass. This setup has been on the bass for most of the time I've had but I'm willing to throw in the Audere for whomever buys her. It changes the tone of the bass but offers a great, diverse set of tones that will surely please someone. It's currently sporting DR nickels.
I recently recorded with this bass through a UA 610 and was astounded at how well it sat in the mix and just how HUGE the fundamental bottom end of this bass was. We recorded my Sadowsky MV5 as well and I personally felt like this bass was easier to mix because I didn't have to do much. For the R&B we were doing, the DJ5 was just a better fit. I think the tightness of the ash, the benefits of a rosewood board and the open voicing of the Aero pickups in the position they're in make for a versatile, professional bass suitable to most any application.
Edited: Unofficial weight: just under 10 lb.
We're preparing to move and for whatever reason I can't seem to find my postal scale anywhere. So, I took the bathroom scale, weighed myself and then weighed myself holding the bass. I'll keep looking for the scale and try and post a more official weight if I can.
If you have any other questions about the bass, please feel free to ask.
Price, etc.:
$1,000 shipped and insured to the 48 in a gig bag. I am not currently considering international sales for this bass.
Trades:
If a trade is easier for you, I would prefer a 34" scale, five-string jazz with '60s spacing but am open to four- or five-string jazz basses. The more vintage sounding, the better. Other basses not meeting this description are less likely but feel free to ask anyways! I am willing to add cash to a deal if it's the right bass.
I have another FS thread open for the Sadowsky MV5, but because I am not able to accept trades for that bass I wanted to keep it separate. Mods, if this is unacceptable, please let me know and I will be happy to add this into the other one.
