Well, I'm still not a 5-string guy.

I feel at home on a 6, at home on a 4, and for some reason, just kind of weird on a 5.
I just put brand new DR Marcus Miller Fat Beams .045-.125 on this one, set it up, intonation, plays really well. (edit: man alive, this bass sounds phenomenal for jaco-like finger style! not that i can play like jaco, but i've never played a Jazz that got such a fantastic bridge pickup fingerstyle sound...i've been sitting here noodling, and tried it in passive mode, panned full on bridge pickup, with treble rolled all the way off, playing through an old marshall JMP into ampeg 810, and this is the best sound for that kind of thing i've ever been able to get from a Jazz)
Specs are as follows:
Handmade
34.5" Scale
3-piece maple neck
Wenge fingerboard with Bass Clef inlay at 12th fret
Spalted Maple top with matching headstock
Ash body
Black Hipshot hardware
19mm spacing at bridge
4+1 tuners
countersunk neck bolts
Glockenklang 2-band preamp
Push-pull switch on volume knob to switch to Passive
Passive sounds like a Jazz bass, nice burp from back pickup, clear fingerstyle with pickups centered. Engaging the preamp with the controls flat sounds very very near the Passive sound. Very powerful Bass control, just a little adds a LOT of heft and punch, the treble adds nice sparkle, and really starts to slice at it's highest setting. With the preamp engaged, and the bass bumped up to 3/4, treble to 1/2, this one gets a great MM kind of slap/thump/pop sound, really has a cool modern kind of take on a '70s vibe ash Jazz. There are a couple of light scratches from string changes on top edge of strap end of body, and I've found a small dent in the bottom (treble side) of the neck heel that looks like it was repaired before finishing. Being handmade, I expected a couple of minor little tool marks, but these are the only things I can find--see photos for pic of the neck heel ding.
Very well-built, and absolutely stunning spalted maple top on this one. I really wasn't in the market for a 5-string when I traded for this just last week, but seeing photos of it, plus hearing and reading about the Marco instruments made me curious enough to try it out. After a couple of hours with it this afternoon, I just still can't really feel comfortable on a 5-string, and from my experience, I just don't think this will ever change.
I will consider trades for 4-string basses with 19mm bridge spacing or something like the following:
newer Fender J
Stingray
PJ
Ideally, I'd like to trade down a bit to get a little cash on my end, but will consider even trades as well.
Will sell outright for
$1700 shipped in CONUS, paypal accepted. I believe this one was $3000 new from Marco.
