I just got this in a trade but P gas keeps hitting me. I prefer a sale but will definitely add cash to a trade for a great P if you have one you might like to trade (and collect a few bucks).

I am not a Fender historian but here is what I know courtesy of the web and the prior owner.
This bass was originally a Fender Foto Flame - it was chipping (as they are known for) so it was refinished. If you know about Foto Flame basses you know this is MIJ quality - as good or better than the MIA of the time. These were built in the Fuji-gen factory which is the same factory making the $2,000.00 Ibanez guitars. The craftsmanship is amazing.
As with any guitar, if not set up right, it can play like junk, but this bass was just professionally set up. The Foto Flame Series was made by Fender Japan through the 1990’s and they stopped production about 1998. The story varies - production was stopped either because of a breakdown in financial negotiations or because MIJ models’ quality was taking business away from the USA models - the latter has been suggested as one of the main reasons Fender moved a plant to Mexico and stopped importing the MIJ models.
The neck does have the famous Hamburglar on it - folklore or urban legend has it that someone who worked at the Fuji-gen Gakki factory actually placed the McDonald’s Hamburglar's face in the film as a joke! And then he was supposedly fired over it! Fact or Fiction? I don’t know but he’s not hard to spot - take a look at the photos.
PM with questions or offers please.
Thanks for taking a look. mt
