Thumbs up FS/FT: A Rare Bird... Fender Precision Steve Harris Signature (1st run)!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
You are looking at a Fender Steve Harris signature P-Bass. It features a Lake Placid Blue finish, (Basswood body, Maple neck/fretboard) BadAss II Bridge, Wine Red Mirror pick guard and a SPB-3 (Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder) pickup, (and don't forget the headstock pic of "Eddie"!!!).
From what I've heard, these Fender Steve Harris signature basses are quite rare (supposedly 500 made for US), and are collectable amongst Fender and Iron Maiden fans alike...
This bass is CIJ and I am having issues dating it... The Fender Japan website says, "P + 6 digits means 1993-1994 for MIJ." The serial on this bass is P + 6, however it's not MIJ, It's CIJ! Fender says, "P + 5 digits means 1999-2002 for CIJ." The serial is 6 digits and not 5, so I'm not 100% sure on the date. I'm assuming its between 2001-2004 because that's around the time when 1st run Steve Harris' were made.
There were 2 runs of Steve Harris Signatures. The first runs were in made in 2001. These basses are essentially a Japanese 1957 RI with a LPB finish, they topped it off with a mirror red (claret) pick guard to imitate the West Ham United crest colors on Steve's original bass. The issue with this series of basses is that they're really nothing like what Steve's signature bass should have been.
In honor to faithfully reproduce the original, Fender offered a 2nd run in 2009. Steve's signature bass was never intended to be like a 57 RI. It was supposed to be more like a 70's RI. The 2nd run addressed this, and featured a heavier alder body in royal blue metallic (darker than the lake placid blue of the 2001 signature), gloss-finished maple fretboard, a chrome mirror pickguard, Badass II Bridge, and the Seymour Duncan SPB-1 pickup. (1st runs say Fender with Iron Maiden and a Eddie pic on the headstock, 2nd runs just say Fender on the headstock.)
Sorry for the after school special. It seems hard to find any info on these rare basses, so I figured I'd shed some light on TB, not only state what I have for sale, but to differentiate the two Fender Steve Harris signature models...
I was never fond of the mirror red pick guard, so I purchased a mint green guard to add to the classy/vintage LPB finish. The Mint green guard is currently installed, however they both will be included in the sale/trade. The bass has some light finish cracks on the side (photographed) I've been told most, if not all 1st runs had an issue with the finish checking/cracking too early. It is just in the finish (not in the wood or structural at all). The neck also has some killer flame to it, It was hard to photograph. Hopefully it turns out for you in the pics!
I'm asking $900 Paypalled/shipped in the USA. I'm not firm on the price, but I know these worth more than your everyday MIJ/CIJ P-bass. Please no ridiculous low-balling!
I will gladly accept trade offers on 4 and 5 string basses and/ or maybe a lightweight head. Brands of interest would be
Fender (Jazz/75 RI), Modulus (Flea 4/5), Ken Smith (Burner 4/5), Lakland (Skyline/55-02D), Musicman (Stingray/Sterling 4/5), Markbass (F1 or ?), and anything else you think would catch my attention. If you have something really nice (like a real Ken Smith, haha), I also have some other gear I would be willing to add to the trade (like a 2 for 1 or something.) I have some pretty nice stuff, just check my profile if you're curious... Feel free to PM with any offers or questions!
Thanks!!!

Bump

I should add that the truss adjusts at the headstock, the frets are near perfect, and the action is set low with new elixers..

Bob,

That would bring a tear to a glass eye... You're not so bad yourself you know . If I'm so cool, you should trade me for your beautiful 55-94 f-less, or CAR JO5 (haha)... BUT seriously, I LOVE that Q6. It sits in the mix sooo well. Sorry things didn't work out with the CS Jazz. Who ended up getting it? I miss that bass too... Thanks again for the kind words!

P

If I could play a 4, THAT would be the bass! (I'm used to sticking my thumb between B/E) It's all good, CSC is on it's way to Brazil through Florida and I ended up with a Sadowsky that I love playing : ) (Mods: thanks for the OT time).

Not all the Harris' have finish cracks . I never knew the '57 stuff either. I know the neck is nothing like any bass I've ever played. I bought mine because of the neck. Someone is going to get a killer bass!

StuL,
While i'm sure not ALL of them have issues, I was told that there was a finish problem on 1st run Steve Harris models. I'm not swearing by it, but it is what I was told... It really is a killer bass. Probably the most playable P-bass around. Thanks for the bump!!!

Just Stu is fine
I'm not sure about which run is which, but I bought mine in April/May of '02. 8 years later, it's my #1. I do hope the finish cracks, it'll start to match the rest of the damage I've done

Again, free bump.

Ditto on the finish cracks....I bought mine a year ago and there were a couple. Not a big deal.... great necks on these basses and the tone lasts for days. Good luck with the sale!

I WISH!

I cant remember the last time I saw one of these come up. I know they arent "artist correct" in many ways, but they are rare!

Bump *sob* for another missed opportunity!
