FS/FT - Vintage Hondo II Professional - Matsumoku Japan made

I have a fondness for old Japanese made basses from the 70s and 80s and really liked the finish on this one when it came up for sale on TB. This bass is extremely well made with a perfect neck joint. I think the wood is ash and it looks to be a one piece body. It has a US Dimarzio precision pickup in it and sounds great. The pots are a bit scratchy and likely need a cleaning. Plays good and set up with medium low action and the truss rod and bridge adjustments all work as they should. The maple neck is a comfortable 32" scale and the frets are in great shape. The seller told me it made in Matsumoku's Japan factory and from what info I could find, this seems accurate. The original case is included.

$225 shipped CONUS and trades considered.

Thanks for looking!

Tony

pinkfloyddan - it sounds like a pbass. the pickups are dimarzio. my pic sucks, but if you look close, you can see the "dimarzio - made in the usa" sticker is still on the pickup.

funkingroovin - i dunno. i'm open really. i'm a bit particular on finishes and really on like burst, natural or "woody" translucent finishes. i'm also an old school bass kind of guy. some non bass stuff i'd like is a pro tools mbbox mini with pt 8, vt bass pedal, ehx pedals, large diaghram mic...

celindermotoman - it feels like a pbass to me. i've been playing a jazz bass pretty much exclusively for 5 or so years now and it feels a bit wider and thicker than a jazz. not much, but noticeable.

thanks for the q's!

I am reincarnating this post for two reasons, 1 practical and one for working out exactly who made these guys, because the assertion that these are matsumoku made is not consistent with my understanding based on some very limited data.

Item 1:

I just bought one of these, only it's a much more beat up one. much more. much. :-)

I am looking for bridge saddles and screws or possibly the entire bridge. I have already posted in the wanted forum, please note that i used one of your pics of your absolutely gorgeous example. :-)

as an aside, man that thing is heavy!

Item 2:

This is actually a more fun question, at least i think so. Everything i have read indicates that the Hondo II Professionals where built by Tokai, but I have only seen that information in the context of guitars and not basses.

There seems to be no lore concerning the basses.

So, it doesnt seem impossible that they where built by matsumoku.

I would say that the bridge supports that assertion because it's also found on a vantage, which is a matsumoku product.

However, the neckplate provides an argument for it being a tokai product and not a matsumoku product, because matsumoku neckplates either say 'made in japan' or 'product of matsumoku' and the neckplate on this bass just has a serial number, which is consistent with the supposedly tokai made guitars?

If any of you have something to add to this i'd be very interested in reading it, and if you know where i can find a bridge, that would be cool too!

tnx!

johnu
