The hefty bridge and 6-bolt neck give the bass a stiffness that you can hear and feel before you even plug it in -- that G&L sustain and ring that you just can't get in a Jazz without expensive upgrades. And, the pickups are hot and somewhat microphonic in the sense that you're able to coax a lot of finesse out of the bass that can get lost on J-bass (or other bass for that matter). It really sounds different from my MFD-equipped G&Ls.
However, if you're a sloppy player, it can be a handful -- I know its helped me improve because all the nasties come right on thru. I have nowhere to hide with this bass.
I've got/owned several J-basses and the only one that can touch my JB-2 is a fretless with Fralin replacement p'ups and a Badass II bridge. Expensive, but common upgrades for a Fender; the JB-2 doesn't need them.
My JB-2 also has the loose output jack. Must be a common malady. Fortunately, its pretty easy to replace.
