FS - Gibson G-3 with case - $500 ???

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm bought this bass years ago, lent it to a friend, forgot about it and just got it back. It's a vintage Gibson G-3 bass with original Bill Lawrence pickups and original hard case. This bass has a bolt on neck. There was a fugly headstock repair (glued and filled) at some point as shown in the pics. It is stable and doesn't appear to have moved since I bought it, but you can easily see and feel it. Luckily, it's close enough to the headstock that you wouldn't feel it unless you tried to on purpose. It also doesn't affect the playability. I have it setup with medium action because that's where I like it. You could set it up lower. I have no idea what all the switches do, sorry :-( But the bass has alot of tones and sounds both clear and warm, if that makes sense, and I didn't notice any issues other than the normal cosmetic wear shown in the pics. It's also very light at about 8.5 lbs on my scale.

My only price reference is another G3 on eBay now for about $1000. I've priced it at half that because of the repair.

$500 (or best offer) includes insured ground shipping CONUS. Paypal only please.

Thanks!

Tony

Looks pretty heavily modified to me, so it may.

To the OP: the bass stock would be wired volume, tone, with the three way switch selecting neck+mid, neck+mid+bridge, or mid+bridge.

It appears it's been rewired VVTT with on/off switches for each pickup. Maybe with an active/passive near the original switch? What's it look like under the guard? Maybe someone went all Artist series on this?

For another reference, I bought my stock G3 for $600, but that was a pretty good deal. I'd say you've priced it about right given the repairs/mods, just wanted to give you some more info.

I've bought a few basses from Tony and they've all been great. I'd buy this one, except I have a formidable home repair bill looming.

Man, that thing brings back memories. I had one just like it in the mid-seventies.

Someone brought over a G-3 a while back to try out my amp for sale - it had a 3 way selector switch like a strat. Your has 3 mini switches. Any idea about this?

no, i wish i did! there is a 3 way toggle switch as well that seems to a pickup selector? i'll see if i can make some sense of the controls and post here later tonight. honestly tho, i'm simple minded and have never grown past the complexities and choices of a jazz bass :-)

Just browsing threads on Gibson g3's and i find this. Im the new owner! I love it. I can't put it down. I've ordered some DR sunbeams for it. hope to see them soon. The two supposed volume tone on top seem to do nothing, maybe its just me. but from what i can tell is that there are two pickup selectors, the original and the mods to single out the pick-ups. Kind of weird but you can get a huge selection of tone whether more p-bass type grind to some smooth jazz bass, and even Ric type tones to my ears. Action is pretty good. might lower it just a pinch. I've already played this at a small gig, and right of the bat all the musicians loved the look and tone. thanks for a wonderful bass.
