FS: Hanewinckel Retro 5 / Kinal MK-5B

I got a sweater and three pairs of socks for Xmas so it looks like I'm gonna have to spring for my own present. Before I blow a bundle on myself, I need to lighten my existing inventory and raise some funds. And away we go!....

First up is my Hanewinckel Retro 5. Can't recall the DOM but here are the specs:

*Neck - 3 piece maple, birdseye maple fingerboard.
*Tuners - Hipshot Ultralites in full chrome, not the typical satin.
*Body - not sure of the wood but finished in a cream white with a nifty gold anodized pickguard (what's a pick?).
*Bridge - Hipshot chrome.
*Strap Buttons - Dunlop locking system.
*Pickups - Bartolini jazz style. Not sure if they're HC or SC but I've never encountered any buzz or hum.
*Elex - Bart two-band preamp, volume, blend.
*Hardshell case in good condition.
*Weight - 8 - 8.5 lbs...lightest bass I own.
*Condition - 9 / 10 and that's conservative. Slight finish dimple on the reverse and minor scratches on the PG.

Although slightly wider, the neck profile is similar to my Pedulla Rapture 5 and set for medium-low action with no buzzes or rattles. Asking $1500 shipped and I'll install a new set of strings before boxing her up.

Next up is my Kinal MK-5B. Once again, I'm not sure of the DOM but the S/N is #75.

*Neck - Highly-figured 7 piece flamed maple w/ walnut (?) stringers. Pau Ferro fingerboard.
*Tuners - Hipshot chrome / satin.
*Body - looks like Alder to me. Quilted maple cap in amber....nice!
*Bridge - Hipshot.
*Strap Buttons - Dunlop locking system.
*Pickups - Bartolini soapbars.
*Elex - Bart 3-band preamp. Volume / blend / bass / mid with 3-way freq. selector switch / treble. 3-way single / series / parallel selector for the bridge pup. EQ defeat switch so you can A/B your setting against the unaffected / flat tone.
*Hardshell case in good condition.
*Weight - ~9 lbs.
*Condition - 8.5 / 10. Minor clear coat blems on body, one on back of neck.

String spacing on the Kinal is somewhat tighter @ 16.5-17 mm (Hipshot bridge allows limited spacing manipulation). Asking $1250 shipped.

Thanks for looking and, as always, PM me with any questions.

Riis

Not sure what the specs say but I'm measuring it out at 18 mm string center-to-center with my pocket rule. Really comfy.

You always seem to have the nicest basses to offer up here Riis. That Hanewinckel Retro 5 is a real beauty. If you have any more close-up photos I'd love to see them.

BTW, I'm still digging the multicolor LeFay Midas 5 that I snagged from you a while back. I put some of those blue FretFX LEDs on the edge of the board and it looks totally killer. A one-of-a-kind bass for sure!

I once owned this Kinal and it is a great bass from a great luthier.

Great price Riis,

If NC State Univ did not have an express lane access to my account I would buy this baby back in a heartbeat!

Good fortune with the sale

That Kinal is a beautiful bass at a nice price. If I wanted a fretted 5'er I'd jump on that.

I love it when old friends pop up on my threads!

I'm a little busy today (who isn't) but I'll snag some close-ups tomorrow on both the Hanewinckel and Kinal. Truth is I have a perpetual woody for 5 string headless basses and found one that fits the bill. For that fact, if I sell one, I may just pull the second from the market. In the meantime, here's an older pic of the Hanewinckel:

any comment on B string definition ? I'm guessing the "non fender" headstock is better for the string tension due to the angle and added pressure on the nut. 34" scale right?

Hi there...that is my favorite Hanewinckel I believe the body is swamp ash if I remember correctly, the scale is 34" and the B string is awesome. I almost bought this one when it was up for sale last time. Great, great bass. Pete's work is as good as any of the high $$ luthiers out there. This bass is no exception.

Happy New Year to you all...

Mark

B string really sings on this one. The tilt-back headstock eliminates some of the problems encountered on Fender-esque designs.

IIRC, the logo is actually pulverized ebony dust or the like. Then again, it could just be drawn on with a Sharpie.

Addt'l Hanewinckel Pics...

Pics / coloring are a little skewed as I shot these indoors (poor natural lighting). For those who've asked, the width @ the nut is 49 mm / 1 15/16" and 73 mm / 2 7/8" @ the 22nd fret.

1. will you ship outside USA?
2. Is it possible for the hanewinckel to function in passive mode?
Thanx, Yaniv

Hanewinckel

I would have been all over this had I seen it a month ago. But on the strength of my love affair with a Hane 4 I bought on TB and had Pete modify, I have ordered a fiver which will be ready in the next six weeks or so. He is a great guy who does amazing work.

Addt'l Kinal Pics

Measures 1 3/4" @ the nut and 2 7/8" @ the 24th fret. Closest thing I have to a "pencil necked groover". Ideal for fingerstyle but the tighter string spacing may be a challenge for you slappers out there.

I'd prefer not to ship outside the US. No, there is no passive mode....and I just went and tugged on each of the pots to make sure!

Riis, that Hane is out of this world. What a sweet looking bass.

Who ever said that the Hanewinckel is the American Celinder made a great analogy. But unlike Chris, I've heard so many great things about dealing with Pete.

Oh and as a note I think that you've gone nuts letting that one go.
