FS/FT Kinal DK5 fretless

I love the sound and feel of this bass so much that I have commissioned Mike Kinal to make me one with four strings. I am just not a 5 string guy and the size of the neck is a bit much for these old hands. But everything Mr. Pyne said in his listing of the instrument last year is true. It plays beautifully and has a wonderful array of sounds, including upright-like. Super ballsy and taught low B which will shake floors too.

The new one won't be along for a few months, so there is no panic. But this one hangs on the wall at the moment. Might as well be in someone's hands.

Has a couple of very minor dings in the clearcoat that I can't get to show up on a camera. Looks stunning in person. Very light and well balanced. Case is a fortress, but not heavy.

Will send pix in a minute along with a link to the original posting.

$1500 shipped and insured in the lower 48. As to trades, only looking for something light and interesting of similar value.

Here is what was written last time around (along with a couple of pathetic pix...if Mr Pyne still has his vastly superior photos around and sees this, I am hoping he will post them. Otherwise, I can send higher rez shots on request):

This is a very beautiful 2009 Kinal DK5 fretless that I'm offering up for hopefully a quick sale. This bass plays perfectly and sounds more like an upright then you would believe possible.

Here are the specs:

Body: Alder, chambered with spruce top
Neck: Bolt on with maple construction and graphite reinforcement
Scale: 34.5" - two octaves
Width at nut: 1.75”
Width at lower bout: 13.5”
Overall length: 45.5 “
Fingerboard: Ebony
Neck markings:Upper edge fret lines and dot position markers
Strings: New set of Thomastik-Infeld JF345 Jazz Bass flat wound (.043, .056. .070, .100, .136)
Pick-ups:
1) magnetic jazz Bartolini, Jazz 59J-1
2) Graph Tech Ghost Piezo in the bridge
Bartolini 3 band preamp
Controls: active preamp volume, blend, bass, treble, and mid range
Finish: Brown Sunburst
Weight: 7.5 lbs.

The bass is in excellent condition and was displayed at the 2009 Vancouver Guitar Show as well as the 2010 Anaheim Winter NAMM show.

Includes molded custom case that was made specifically for this bass. This case was manufactured in the US & is bulletproof! There is 2” thick hard foam, “mouse fur” interior lining, a large outside pocket for cables, strings, two smaller outside pockets, a carry strap and a shoulder strap.

If you have the photos, 'twould be greatly appreciated. You have saved me in the past. Thanks for the comments, too.

You mean string spacing (neck width at nut and bout are listed)?
I don't know and I can't find my gauge. As soon as I do, I will measure it, sorry. But the strings don't feel crowded.

(Can you take the neck width and divide by 5?).

I was the original owner of this bass - had Mike build it for me. It really is a beauty - great sounding and playing instrument.

Thanks. It is fitting that I am a transplanted Canuck.

Dave

Thanks for the offer. If I can't sell the Kinal outright for a reasonable price, its the kind of offer I would take, but only so I could sell the trade.

I am just long too many basses and have decided (including the DK4) to go with what I have now.

I had a custom DK5 I sold mostly due to weight. Since then I've gotten into fretless. I still love my SK5. A bass like that would certainly be up my alley.

PS The Modulus has an incredible tone with the U-Retro!

Just too many basses (that I love). Can't own 'em all. But I may be back to you if the Kinal doesn't sell.
