FS: Kinal DK5 Hollowbody 5 string - PRICE LOWERED!

Sign in to disble this ad
For Sale: I am reselling a Kinal DK5 hollowbody 5 string that I bought last year from TBer DaveAceOf Bass. It was a bass he had custom built to his specs by Mike Kinal. Here is a link to his listing where he explains the bass in detail. FS/FT: Kinal DK5

I am so conflicted about parting with this bass as Dave the original owner has great taste as the electronics and the neck are superb. The neck feels just great and I think John East makes the best preamps on the market. And, while I have never been the biggest fan of bridge piezo pickups, this one sounds really good and a little blended in with the magnetic pickups lends a really effective acoustic quality to the sound. But, after a few years of trying different things, I am realizing that I am most comfortable playing passive basses. Something about having all these tonal options at my fingertips pushes my OCD buttons in an extremely disruptive way for me in gig situations. I just have much better gigs with few to no options. But, damn, this is a really nice bass!

Moving on, there is a little bad news (that I believe I have priced accordingly for) - when this shipped from Dave a bottle of wood oil he included got loose and dinged up a the bass a little bit and more disruptively, got jammed into the co-centric midrange eq knobs which slightly bent the inner shaft of the pot. While visually the shaft is straightened back, there is a tiny bit of wobble that results in a few spots in the rotation where one pot catches the other pot and makes it turn. I would say about 85% of the rotation functions properly but then you will have this catch on the other 15%. It isn't that you cant eventually set the knobs where ever you like, it will just take two hands for that 15%. It's electronically and physically fully functional, just a little bit of a nuisance. I do believe that you could get a replacement pot from John East and swap it out though I imagine that that would be a job for a savvy tech. Otherwise, all is as it should be electronically.

As far a physical wear and tear, there is a small scratch on the front of the headstock, a couple of dings on the top of the headstock, a few small dings and scratches on the front of the body as a small ding on one of the F-holes. Lastly, there is a little belt rash on the back. I am including photos of the various flaws. Nothing to glaring and assume that the photos are always going to be unflattering. THe neck is straight and buzz free.

This comes with a custom hardshell case. $2100,now asking $1900 shipped in the CONUS.

Feel free to contact me with questions.

Thanks!
Larry

I remember when this came up last time - super cool bass. I wish I had the outright cash this time. Are you open to trades?

Bump for a really nice bass!

I owned one of these a while back and it had a very beautiful voice. It recorded really well and was a joy to play.

You don't see these very often so consider it seriously if you are looking for a "different kind" of 5 to add to your arsenal!

It didn't have those dings when I sold it. I knew about the pot problem but not the dings, but those must not have come from the Ken Smith oil I included. So you're letting her go? I'm broke or I'd buy it back. Someone will be happy...a good tech can fix anything!

This bass is really great. The tone can be very warm, or just cutting. My custom SK5 took it's place, and I'll never let it go. Someone will love this--but my personal vote is get the pot fixed and keep it.
