FS: Lakland USA 55-94 Black (1998)

FS: Lakland USA 55-94 Black

This is the best bass I have. I just don't play 5 string anymore. When I bought it about three years ago I emailed Lakland and Dan Lakin replied saying the color was rare.

The bass body is black, slightly transparent--you can see some wood grain through the black finish. The condition is very good but with some small nicks and dings on the body front and back, mostly on the bottom edge, near the knobs, and where the right wrist rests on the front contour. Not noticeable from a few feet away, typical of a bass that has been played for 15 years. I can add some close up pictures, taken with a better camera, in a few days.

The quartersawn maple neck, curly maple fretboard and frets are very good, very well cared for. The neck feels hand crafted--and it may be. As far as I know, this bass is all original. Made in 1998.

Flatwound strings, Bartolini pickups. Weight is 9.15 lbs.

The hardshell case is in very good condition. No tears in the tolex. I think it is the original case but I can’t be sure.

I don't know what kind of wood this is. Is it possible to determine this by looking at the grain pattern?

Yeah, call them to be sure. I had that same discussion with Leo at Lakland a few months back. Because of the pickguard, I thought my trans burgundy bass was alder, it turns out it was a standard (swamp ash). By the grain it looks like this one is just like mine. GLWTS, beautfiul bass!

Thanks for the information. I looked online to compare ash and alder and by the wide grain pattern it looks like ash. I'll try calling Lakland.

Becuase of the pickguard (if original) I was thinking this is the "classic 55-94" model which are alder...but it does look like ash?

Yeah, read above. Mine is the same and was being advertised as a Classic, until Lakland cleared things out. There were a few Standards with pickguards made right about 1997-1998. I am glad I was not the only one that got confused.

Oh my... I have a '99 55-94 and i agree it's the best bass I own and have ever owned. These old ones have some serious mojo. This color combo and maple neck to boot is classic.

Sorry, but the only trade I might have interest in would be a Fender Jazz 4 string.

This thing is so damn nice looking. It's almost got me forgetting about my "No 35-in scale" rule.
Is the bridge spacing 19mm on the older ones like this or was it narrower?

And a bump for a sexy bass.

Bridge spacing

I just measured the string spacing at the bridge. Yes, it is 19 mm. If you have any other questions, please let me know.
