Another TBer commissioned John Kallas to build this bass a little more than a year ago. He took delivery of it last March. It's the equivalent of a Fender Custom Shop 66 Jazz Bass but better IMO.
FYI John learned how to build basses from Leo Fender when he worked with him back in the '70's. His skill and knowledge of bass building is unmatched and this is a prefect example of what can be created when you actually "know" what you are doing and have the experience and talent to make it a reality!
Here is a link to John's web site: http://johnkvintageguitars.homestead.com/index.html
I purchased this bass from him two months ago, but unfortunately I have not been playing the bass as it deserves. I am now obliged to sell her, but I really wish I didn't have to.
It's in virtually mint condition with only some VERY MINOR signs of wear that are impossible to photograph. There are no dings of any kind on the instrument!!! Also in case you can't tell, the color is a perfect Fiesta Red.
It is by far the most resonant instrument I have ever owned. It's also the loudest passive bass I have ever played. It has special design Duncan pickups that totally nail the vintage tone we are all after but they deliver it with more punch and clarity.
I will ship it in a nice Fender vintage style brown hard shell case.
Selling price is $1,500.00 or best SERIOUS and REASONABLE offer! and that includes the case.
PayPal is gladly accepted!

There actually is a standard string tree installed. The headstock picts do not show it. I can take another shot with the tree is requested.

I have never played a jazz bass that felt so "alive" in my hands. This bass exceeds the quality of a Fender Custom Shop at half the price. If you're in the market for a "closet classic" jazz bass save yourself a ton of cash and buy this one. They really don't get any better! |

Did Fender make this bass or is it authorized or licensed by Fender? I am interested in it but I am confused as to what it is.
Does it have a serial number?

Does it have a serial number? | To be honest, this confused me as well, and I really do not have an accurate answer for this.
As far as I can surmise, according to John Kallas' info attached above, the body and neck are genuine Fender.
However this is a reproduction made by John Kallas, not made by Fender. |

However this is a reproduction made by John Kallas, not made by Fender. | Let me try to clarify further. According to what I recall, John Kallas buys the bodies directly from Fender and the necks come from All Parts. John strips the necks completely, reshapes them, dries them in a heated drying room for 3 to 6 weeks, refinishes them and sprays the headstocks to match the body color. In this case the body is poly and the neck and headstock is nitro. The bass is not a "Fender Jazz Bass" but rather a very authentic replica built by a master luthier who worked personally with Leo Fender back in the '70's. I hope that helps! |
