This is a late '80's Modulus 5 string that was built as a "transitional prototype" according to Geoff Gould (founder of Modulus). It's a very cool instrument with a huge but very focused voice!
It's definitely been played and has had different pickups and preamps installed in it over the years. It's "neck-through" design is VERY rare in a 34" scale. I guess you could say it's a piece of Bass History!
It currently sports a pair of big Bartolini soap bars. I don't know what kind of preamp is in it but it's an 18 volt system that offers all kinds of tonal flexibility. It's a three band system with a push pull pot that puts it into passive mode if desired. I believe two of the mini switches are coil taps (one for each pickup) and the middle mini switch is a three position midrange frequency selector.
The string spacing at the bridge is
16.5 mm and the nut measures
1.75". It weighs in at
10.3 lbs and balances very well on a strap.
This is a sleek instrument that's very easy to play. It has that classic tightly focused tone that Modulus is famous for. It's low end is tremendous and it's output can be set VERY hot. There is a trim pot in the control cavity that can be used to tame this beast a bit. The action is very low with no buzzing. There is some fret wear but they still have lots of life left in them.
There are small dings and scratches on the body and one on the back of the neck (very minor). One of the laminations on the top of the body, between the pickups, under the strings, has separated a bit. It doesn't pose any kind of structural issues but I needed to mention it in the spirit of "full disclosure"!
If you're looking for a perfect Modulus 5 string then this probably isn't what you want. But if you don't mind a some authentic road-worn "character" and you're in the market for some killer Modulus tone and playability at a reasonable price, this could be the ticket!
$1,580.00 OBO shipped and insured in the CONUS.
I will also consider trades but I'm pretty picky. Top of my list right now would be a 34" unlined fretless with a graphite neck.
