FS: Music Man Big Al 5 SSS - Sapphire Black & Maple

Sign in to disble this ad
Ya, this is a bit confusing.
I traded this locally late last week, but the other guy ended up not jiving with wrangling the 4-band preamp. Where his old bass works for him and was still around it just made sense to be a good guy and trade back.

So... this is still available.

Musicman Big Al 5
Maple neck - Oil/Wax finish
Sapphire Black (dark charcoal with a blueish tint)
4-band preamp
SSS pickup configuration
9.4 lbs on digital scale (Liiight for a musicman)
Includes Musicman Hard Case molded for Big Al bass

Purchased May 2nd from The Perfect Bass.

Bass is in better than excellent condition. I cannot find a ding, dent, scratch or divot in it. It has been played and gigged, but it's in the same condition that I got it from The Perfect Bass in.

Through tonight... $1300 shipped and insured if payed via USPS money order or other arrangements.

Trades +cash: Yamaha TRB5

I'm very close to keeping it. I have a Dingwall Combustion showing up tomorrow, which will mean the Combustion, Big Al, or my preferred Spector will find a new home after the sorting out period. 99% sure the Spector stays, so it will be a deathmatch between the Big Al and Combustion. The Big Al will win for versatility... we'll see if the Combustion wins for playability and comfort.

If you don't mind could you comment on the Spector vs the Big Al tone wise? Great new pic you got there.

IMHO the Spector has a couple punchy modern aggressive tones, which I happen to really like.

The Big Al is a virtual Chameleon... it has wads and wads of different tones in it for the taking. It can do P-bass, Mudbucker, Sterling, SR5, and any combination in between you could wish... in either active, or full passive with tone control. With the 4-band EQ you can nudge the tones even further different directions. The combinations are limitless. But it's not for the 'set it and forget it' type necessarily.

"Right Now at this point" I'm not making use of the Big Al so I'm looking at selling it. I WILL be buying another or a Reflex in the future for the versatility.

It could stay yet depending on my reaction tomorrow to the Combustion that arrives. One of the other will be going.

Those were taken with my wife's Nikon DSLR, but most of mine usually are just taken with a cheap Canon digital camera, or even :: gasp :: my iPhone. I find I'm taking more with my iPhone than the Canon anymore. The HDR photo function on the iPhone does a great job of presenting detail. Just not as good as the true Nikon DSLR.

Can't believe I forgot to put the weight in the posting. Seeing as how thats the first thing I usually ask about or check on a bass.

This is a Liiiight 9.4 lbs.

Hello STFLBN, could you [or someone] else enlighten me [if you know] about the eq found on the big Al as it compares to the bongo? Is the big Al [or Reflex] the next step up ?
i had a 4-string bongo and was gonna move up to a 5 bongo, i've almost got the funds, but would like to make the best educated decision and the big Al may be it ....? thank you in advance.

Same 4-band preamp as the Bongo. Same exact thing. Both the Reflex and the Big Als have the Bongo Preamp.

The Big Al has the SSS or single H pickup option. The Reflex has the HSS, HH, or single H pickup option.

What makes the Big Al unique, special, desirable IMHO is the pickup switching options via the buttons, and the fantastic Passive functionality which Bongo's and older Musicman models do not offer. Just switching from active to passive on these basses turn them into an entirely different beast tonally.

And you shouldn't be shy about making an offer. Looks like you could be an easy affordable ship-to for me if you're in the heartland.
