FS: Old G&L Fretless L-1000 4 String

OK, what I have here is a bit of a hybrid, with the interesting thing being the body. This is a fantastic playing and sounding bass. I hate to sell her, but I haven't played her in a while. Here's the specs:

Mahogany body, with 11-26-80 penciled in the neck pocket. What makes this interesting is it's a 4-hole pattern for the neck screws. I was told by the previous owner that he did some research and figured that it is a prototype.

Bridge serial number is B001575, which dates to 1980 and puts it in the first 1000 G&L's made.

Pickup has slotted heads for adjustment.

Pots date to 1979.

One piece slightly flamed maple neck with beautiful ebony board and side dots.

Neck is dated SEPT 27 1990.

Headstock decal has "by Leo Fender".

G string tuner is very slightly bent.

Fender style hardshell case with burgundy fur.

The neck pocket is extremely tight-I had a heckuva time getting the neck off and back on.

Great punch on this bass, even with the coated strings. Asking $750.00 or best offer, which includes Fedex Ground and insurance. I take Paypal too.

That's interesting...
I've never seen a four bolt neck attachment like that. The first 1980 bass serial number was 518, your serial number would seem to put that outside the range of prototypes, but, Leo was always messing with stuff.
1980 should have a large hex pole pickup, the slot-poles are a 1981 thing.

Nice looking bass!

Thanks Chef, it is a weird one. I thought that it should have hex poles, but I wasn't sure. It's always been a 4 bolt body-there's no filled holes. It sounds really nice. I play mostly rock, and when I first got it all the guys said "I didn't know you played fretless" and kinda chuckled. When I plugged it in and started playing, they loved it!

Hardly anything on earth brings the beef like a mahogany bodied L1000!

Is this bass passive then? Is the neck wide like a P bass?

Yes, it's passive. The nut is 1 3/4" wide like a P-bass, but it's only 3/4" deep at the nut-very comfortable to play.

I'd wager the nut is 1 11/16; and yes, a very comfortable shallow C profile.
One of my fave necks.

FYI? In pic #15 it looks like I can see just the "very top" of the original third screw hole under the shim. Check it out, that's also where the third screw lays out on my L-1000. (I could be all wrong, let me know)

Killer bass at a killer price!!

I just took off the neck again. You can definitely see a screw hole on the neck where it would have been on a 3-hole body, but remember the neck is 10 years newer than the body. I checked out the body real carefully, and it definitely has never been set up in a 3-hole configuration. It's always been a 4-hole body.

Thanks for your interest!

I'm open to trades for any gear.

Last Chance Before Ebay!

I hate to do this, but I'll have to put her up on Ebay this weekend if I don't sell or trade her this week.
C'mon, let's keep this in the Talkbass community!
